software and program icons

got another icon problem to solve ,if i can get some help. most of my program and software icons that appear in my start menu have changed to a default type icon and i would like to know how or if i can get back the original icons for these programs. i had the same problem with my favorites icons or favicons and got helpful info on how to get those back, but when you right click on these programs and click on properties there is no option to change icons like in the favorites menu. hope someone has a solution to this problem as good as the one for the favicon problem.

With hidden and system files showing (any folder>Tools>Folder Options>View tab), search for "shelliconcache" and delete it. Windows will make a new one when you reboot.

Or download and install TweakUI and use its repair feature.

thanks for the reply miz. i actually went to find files and folders and typed in shelliconcache and found the folder and deleted it and restarted the computer and still my icons are mia. they disappeared the same time my favicons did and that was when i visited the housecall site for a free scan and all i got was missing icons. other than removing each program and reinstalling it is there any way to get back icons for my installed software items like nero, and win zip etc. the windows folders type icons are just too full to look at.
