Hi all, hope one of you I T gods can help,Hi ,help needed,im trying to set up my wireless network,i have a cable broad band connection ,which is connected to my pc via a usb cable ,would have used the ethernet cable ,but the modem said there was a fault with my ethernet connection,i have since fitted a second ethernet card ,to create a wired network ,that never worked kept getting the message one of your cables is unplugged .One of these ethernet cards was built into the Via KT400 chipset board the other one was a pc card realtek ethernet card fitted by me securely and the cables were properly home, both these connections were enabled and visible in my network connections and device manager .I gave up at that time but now i need a wire less network ,has anybody got any idea why i cant use my ethernet ports ,i have been into my my bios and they dont seem to be disabled there .
I have put my NTL modem software in and tried to swap over from usb to ethernet but it doesnt look possible.
Where do i go from here ,do i delete my network adapter (dont fancy doing that because i will lose access to your help)and start from the beginning and reinstall my modem.any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pedroman and welcome,
Dont delete anything as of yet. firstly can you list your router make and model, modem make and model etc. Can you also go into start, then right click on "my computer", go to propeties, click on the hardware tab and click on device manager. Check under network adapters. Are there any exclamation marks? Also do you have any question marks any where else in device manager? If so are there any details?

Why were you advised to do that? What is the purpose? If you need to do a pc to pc connection with ethernet you will need a crossover ethernet cable not an ordinary straight through ethernet cable. You can tell the difference by looking at the colour of the wires at each end. If the wires are in exactly the same order each end it is a straight through cable.
You may also need to set up a static IP, which I can talk you through, if you have a crossover cable.

Pc tech said do a wired connection first, dont really know why, looks like ive got a straight through cable, still got the same problem though ,broadband modem is currently connected by usb, because it could not find either of my ethernet ports,my new router needs to be connected via ethernet

Try connecting via ethernet your new router to either of network adapters. Make sure they are both enabled in "network connections". Once thats done go to start, then run. type cmd and press ok. then type ipconfig /all and post your results. You can disconnect your USB modem while doing this to stop any confusion.
