1st thing to do is try cleaning the CDROM, the laser could be the culprit.

press F8 _before windows 98 boots- to go to "command prompt only"-must select this- the other method into the command prompt will not work----once in the C:\ prompt type without the quotes "scanreg /fix" exactly hit enter (this also compacts the registry and should not harm anything) now when done hit enter when it says its done and give the "ok" once back at the C:\prompt type exactly without quotes "win" this will now take you to the 98 GUI

forgot to add after the reg fix type again without quotes "scandisk" at the command prompt. The Whole total scan for Bad sectors at the end is up to you but will take a very long time if you have a huge HD

I do not believe this is a registry error. It is a hardware error. When you put the CD in the computer is not reading the cdrom and probably has a conflict and crashes.

Could be the cdrom is bad or the IDE cable for the cdrom is bad. Are there any other devices hooked up to the same IDE cable? e.g., another hard drive, a DVD, another cdrom?

Is this a stand alone CDROM or a CDROM Burner that is having the problem?

Right click on "My Computer" then to "Properties" then to "Device Manager". Find the entry for the CDROM, highlite and remove it.

Now reboot and Windows will reinstall it. If you get the same error, then I suspect the CDROM itself is going bad. If you get the error (and it is a Burner) when trying to burn, clean out your windows temp folder. Ccleaner (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/ccleaner)is a good program to use:

 sorry all Ive tried removing the Cd-rom and windows did re-install it automatically but to no avail...I tried cleaning the laser..no luck..I did the scandisk and regfix but nothing..sorry I dont understand what you mean by stand alone but it is a built in CD-writer cd-rom..another thing.when I right click on the cd-rom drive and go to properties the pie graph shows there is no memory all is used..also cleared the temp folder to no avail...It happens when I put any CD into the drive not just when im burning..the error message that comes up says in the blue screen "windows" this program will be shutdown etc..would you like me to report back exactly what it says ..thank you for your guys help.

spybot Search and destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ also you can immunize. :) which means to stop them in there tracks...also download http://hostsman.abelhadigital.com/ hostman its a good program and update it at the four or so host sites, it auto installs the updates.. this hosts files stops spyware, and blocks ads and parasites from either leaving or entering your computer, by leaving i mean contacting the ad server, trojan server, etc... :)

I have after the update over 75000+ entries... what it does is sets the IP to your computers HOME IP we all have the same so it points back to your computer and not theirs..
