i have two computers hooked up sharing a dsl connection via a linksys router and my windows 2000 will not connect but my xp computer can. in ie and netscape i recieve an error saying cannot find server. everything was working just fine two days ago. i've done everything i can think of from running sfc/ scannow, chkdsk /f, restored registry, re-installed the network card. yes everything in the network settings is the same as xp settings. i just dont think the router is sending the DHCP. if i ping yahoo.com or dslreports.com i get Unknown Host yahoo.com same for dslreports.com. is there anyway i can repair the os like i can in xp without losing data.

NOTE:i've notice this strange thing usually when you install something or change settings in the network settings it ask you to insert the OS cd then it copies some files when i re-installed my network card it did not do that. it only asked for the netwrok card driver.

Hi pitbull, welcome to Cyber Tech Help.

Your going to need to get over to Linksys (http://www.linksys.com/download/) and get the router
upgraded first. Any firmware and drivers showing you want.

After all that is done one the win2k comp in the command prompt
type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew then
test your connection and see of your online.

For the installs, it depends on the device. Sometimes WindowsXX
want files from the CD, hence the request for it. Windows carries
many drivers within itself, if WindowsXX thinks it may have a driver
it will want the CD to have a look because when you install WindowsXX
all the drivers are not installed on the hard drive.
Best way to install WindowsXX is to copy all the files off of the CD
onto the hard drive and do the install from the hard drive.

warning 12/2/2002 2:43:37 pm Dnscahe

The DNS Client service could not contact any DNS servers for a repeated number of attempts. For the next 30 seconds the DNS Client service will not use the network to avoid further network performance problems. It will resume its normal behavior after that. If this problem persists, verify your TCP/IP configuration, specifically check that you have a preferred (and possibly an alternate) DNS server configured. If the problem continues, verify network conditions to these DNS servers or contact your network administrator.

Any splats in Device Manager on the NIC?

Sound like the NIC isn't installed. The router will show a green
light (Link Act) in the face of the router above the port # you
have the win2k plugged into. If the connection is good the
light is on. On win2k you should have an icon in the taskbar
when the NIC installed properly.

actually the icon is showing in the taskbar and every min or so i see it blinking maybe trying to pull dhcp info. the device manager says the network card is running properly. i'm going to pull the network card out and then insert it again. i had a feeling the network card was dead but the two little computers in my taskbar was showing my computer as being connected. i can send files back and forth through the network but i just can't get online.

Then perhaps the rj45 is bad or you have a crossover rj45
