I am trying to upgrade my PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP. I bought the new software, but when I try to uninstall Windows 98, I receive a message that says: "Uninstall file(s) are missing (C:/SUHDLOG.DAT). Please understand that I am not very computer literate, and I don't understand how this file can be missing. How do I get it back? I have been in touch with Dell, AOL and Microsoft, and I get nothing but techno-babble. Can anyone help me?

Welcome to CTH

That file, if it is still there, would be hidden. To unhide it:

Double Click on "My Computer" then at the menu at the top go to View | Folder Options, then on the View TAB uncheck the box that says: Hide file extensions of know file types, Click OK and close the box and My computer. Now try it.

Thanks for trying, but it didn't work. Maybe the file is gone, although I don't know how it would have happened.
Do you know if there is a way of reinstalling that file?

Windows creates a backup copy of your partition information in the Suhdlog.dat file at the end of a successful installation; Uninstal.exe restores the partition information that is listed in the Suhdlog.dat file to your hard disk during the uninstallation process. It is not a hidden file.
Do you have an XP upgrade cd? Have you checked to see if all your hardware is compatible with XP?
Use the XP Upgrade Advisor (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/advisor.mspx)
I guess you could reinstall windows 98 over the top and then try the upgrade again. But make sure you are capable of using XP.

But, don't I have to uninstall 98 before I install XP? I have the XP CD, so that's not a problem. By the way, love the Blue Angels!

If you have an XP Setup CD, then it will wipe windows 98 out when it does the partitioning, formatting, and installing.
If you only have an XP Upgrade CD, then I think it still has the option to not keep a backup of 98 to return to.
And yes, the Blue Angels are awesome. I can watch them practice all the time when they are not in El Centro for the winter. I love 'em too.

Hey, Blue Angel, I solved my problem. I finally took the machine to the techno-geeks at the computer center and they took care of it. It seems that you don't uninstall the old program, you just install the upgrade and it takes care of everything else. I wish I understood these things. I feel really stupid! But, while it was there, they took care of some other problems, too, so it was worth the embarrassment!! Thanks for your help, too. Kathy

Hey, glad you got fixed up. Hope you didn't have to pay much. That's why we try to help and avoid the cost of some techno-geeks.:D
But sometimes the info going back and forth gets misconbobulated.:dizzy:
Have fun and safe surf'n.
