Unfortunately i have a virus which has caused many problems which i cant resolve, i think my anti virus app may have let me down

I am formating my computer and starting a fresh install of windows XP. I want good security software, i am currently using Avast pro, but i was wondering if there is something which is better. i have used Norton and Mcafee before, i didn't like Mcafee because it too so long too loads each time i turned my computer on. maybe if there is something which can scan for spyware aswell.

I want something which loads fast, works efficiently and updates regularly.
someone already advised i use Panda platinum. what do you think?

I would recommend ZoneAlarm Security Suite.

This months edition of PCW has a Security Suite grouptest with all the major players. ZA was the editors choice :)

it strikes me that NOD 32 and Ewido would be the most awesome combination ever, although I haven't used them together. I do currently use NOD 32 and its one of the best antiviruses on the market next to Kaspersky. It's very small, effective, and doesn't hinder startup or shutdown.

My experience with Panda Titanium 2006 may not be typical, but it has been horrible! The program started giving low protection error messages after working just fine for 6 weeks. Their support has been useless. The techie kept sending boilerplate requests for the same info over and over. Finally, after I worked out what the problem might be, he sent information describing the problem accurately, but gave information that was not user-friendly, and according to someone one this site, innaccurate. After I sent a letter requesting money back, i was contacted by their "2nd level" tech support, but he has not answered emails and was not available when I called. I am working with help from this site, and from friends, to resolve the problem, but I would avoid Panda like the plague. I spoke with some computer salespeople who told me they no longer support the product. It may work well for some, but if you run into problems, you are on your own!

There's a very interesting discussion going on at CTH regarding antivirus software. Check it out here. (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118031)
