That it is.. you are guilty of violating a copyright..

to distribute them, yes. But if you own the dvd and you want to make copies to convert to other formats for your own use and not to distribute, then its like making backups of what you already have and paid for.
borrowing from your friend and renting from blockbuster means that you don't own the dvd. therefore it is illegal to make copies.

bad advise - legally you cannot even make a copy of your own dvd if you have to bypass any security on the dvd and all dvds now have some sort of security. In the US, its a violation of the DCMA, other countries have their own version of the dcma.

its not really the copying that's illegal though, apparently they've gotten over it, just the fact that you're breaking their security measures. And I did forget that they have security measures, never having done so myself. Perhaps they'll change it in the future but now its quite sensitive.

Thats why I love my country, I hope the next thing they legalize is DVD movie downloads. Currently music downloading is legal, uploading is illegal. Canada Court said "personal use" over "copyright". Once I buy a DVD legally, legally its mine and therefor I own it and therefor I have the right to make a copy of it or a backup. I have a suggestion for industry however they would get idea's from me and actually consider it.

FYI, it is only legal in Canada to download NOT to copy rented or borrowed DVD's and rip those.. Better brush up on your Canadian law!!

I wasn't saying that it was legal to burn owned DVD's in Canada, I was making a point. Maybe I didn't word that right. Oh yeah should have mentioned that should be legal.
