brand new compaq athlon 64 with winXP preinstalled.

connecting to home network that works fine otherwise, with other computers.

internet is fine.

LAN connection doesn't work - can't find other computers.

I went through the windows "help" and tried a few things including:

--made sure all computers are have the same workgroup name

--made sure Client for MS Windows is enabled, and File and Print sharing

I also disabled the Windows firewall.

I also did some pinging:

--ping from new computer to router - successful (1 ms)

--ping from new computer to other computer - successful (12ms)

--ping from new computer to self - UNsuccessful - request time out, if Norton Internet security is turned on. If I turn off Norton, the new computer can ping itself.

I noticed the following:

-- if I disable Norton Internet Security on the new computer, the other computers can find it, but it (the new computer) still can't find the other computers.

-- when I run the "network diagnostics" tool in the Windows help section, I get a couple red failures:

DHCPServer = 16.92.3.250 (FAILED)
DNSServerSearchOrder (FAILED)

(the diagnostic is done with Norton disabled)

soooo, if anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!!!

First I would suggest that you run the Network Wizard.

The IP: 16.92.3.250 for the DHCP server poses a problem. It isn't a private IP address so if are trying to run a LAN with its own DHCP server something is configured wrong. LANs must use a private IP range (10.x.x.x, 192.168.x.x) to work properly.

How is your network setup?

network wizard seemed to work. even though the other computers were working fine before, evidently they needed me to run through the network wizard again. so far looking good. thanks!

as far as the IP address of the DHCP server goes... I have no idea. hopefully it's not a problem
