Hi guys. Im totally new to networking and I needed to transfer an 800 MB file from my laptop to my PC.

(1) My PC is Pentium III and is Windows 2000.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>cmd /k ipconfig

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

PPP adapter Connection through Intel(R) PRO_100 VM Network Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 59.93.87.211
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 59.93.87.211

BTW, I can ping my default gateway.

(2)My laptop is also Pentium III and runs on Windows XP Pro. I can not use the "cmd /k ipconfig" on my laptop as I have an internet connection only on my PC.

Now, onto the cable. I know for sure that it is an RJ45 cable, but im not sure whether it is a straight or crossover.

If I place the cable side by side (with the clips behind) then the order of the colours are same (diagram: http://img302.imageshack.us/img302/7678/asdfgh9ep.png (http://imageshack.us)). However, if I make them face each other, the order changes (obviously)... I have tried creating an incoming connection with my laptop but my PC and Laptop cant find each other. I am quite confused so if any of you can give me a step-by-step explanation or a link I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

Welcome :)

I can not use the "cmd /k ipconfig" on my laptop as I have an internet connection only on my PC.
IPCONFIG has nothing to do with the internet. It will tell you the IP Address of the installed and connected Network Adaptor. This can be a LAN connection.

You need to purchase a Cat5 CrossOver cable. Connect both computers then run the Network wizard on the XP Machine. It will setup the laptop and you can create a setup floppy to use on the 2000 machine.
