Gday.
I am speaking on behave of a friend. He has recently signed up for broadband and has been successfully using it for a couple of days on the host computer. However when he connects the other two computers in his house to his hub he gets a IP conflict and no computers can access the internet.

I dont know much about his setup or hardware. What I do know is:
- The modem is a Siemens SpeedStream 4200
- He has a separate hub
- The host computer is Windows XP
- Another computer is Windows 98. The other is unknown.
- The host computers TCP/IP DNS is set to automatic. The other option below is also auto. I am unsure of the other computer's settings.

Both myself and him dont know much about modems and settings. Is there some settings we need to change on all the computers like the DNS to force each computer to have separate Ip addresses?

Thanks for you help

I am trying to solve this quickly so here is some more info

It says the modem does not support multi-home. does this have anything to do with using two computers at once to connect to the web?

thanks again

The problem maybe that it is a hub not a router. If you are sure that he is using a modem connected to a "HUB" than the modem is tring to assign the same IP to all systems. Get a small home router, linksys, dlink etc... and install it to the modem, let the router assign ips to the computers and that should allow all the computers to connect to the internet.

Here are the specifications of the modem. It has a router built in.

The hub is a separate piece of hardware that is connected to the modem by a cable.

Instead of running from the problem and getting new equipment is there a rememdy for this particular hardware/problem?

thanks

You need to connect the PCs to a Router using NAT.
This will ensure that each PC can have a unique IP address. You cannot do this with the hub.

If your Router has this feature then check a few things
Are the PCs set to Automatically Obtain and IP address or are they using a Static IP?
Is DHCP enabled in the Router config?
