Due to a catastrophic system failure, I was forced to reload my windows 98 system. The problem that has arisen is that my cd burner does not recognize any media put into it for writing to. I have tried removing the software via the control panel add/remove and reloading my software for the unit. Upon reading the installation disc I get the following failure notice: Error while decompressing file C:/windows/~VIS000/Iomega_Driver_Update.exe, err=-9.

I've searched for this file with no success, and I can not reinstall my CD/RW drive. Can you help?

Does it even recognize what type of burner it is and all that?

The hardware does not get installed until after the software with this drive (as per Iomega's instructions), and it's the software installation where the error occurs. I've already tried a new software installation disk with the same results.

as far as I know 98 should load and detect the hardware whether or not the software is installed. click the windows key between ctrl and ALT and the pause key at the same time. Go to device manager and go to CDROM, right click the one ur having trouble with or all of them if need me and select remove, confirm and reboot, windows will redetect..

Having my system recognize the drive is not the problem. The problem is the inability to successfully run the setup software.

Howdy:

You have confused here.. First, you say this.. The hardware does not get installed until after the software with this drive (as per Iomega's instructions), and it's the software installation where the error occurs.

Windows doesn't care if you have a cd-rom, a cd-r or a cd-rw.. it should be recognized regardless as all of them use generic drivers.. What it may not do is burn anything due to a lack of operating/burner software..

That being said, what nowshining is saying holds true.. the burner should be able to be seen in Device Manager.. Is it??

So, connect the darn cd-rw and then install the program.. you might be surprised !!

What part of my following the installation instructions has you confused? Iomega is very concise in saying in their instructions, and I quote: "STOP! Install software before installing hardware." I really don't care if windows recognizes the hardware...It won't work without the software. I'm not talking about drivers, I'm talking about the complete software for the unit, ie: The shell, the internal I/O commands within the unit, etc. I appreciate your response, but once more the original problem was getting an error message: Error while decompressing file C:/windows/~VIS000/Iomega_Driver_Update.exe, err=-9.

This is the problem I'm trying to solve, I can get windows to recognize any PnP hardware, but getting this unit to run under it's own software is not happening due to the failure of the software's load failure.

Okay.. what are you using to load the software with?? An install cd that came with the unit or something else??

Have you gone to the manufacturers website and looked for the install program there??

Lastly, just what is the name of the software you are trying to install??

Thanks again for your reply Murray. I've gone to the IOMEGA site and downloaded the newest update for the unit, but that didn't help. I ordered a new installation disk but had the same error message come up. I called the IOMEGA tech support, but they told me the problem lies within my system. And for that info/service I was charged a fee....Gee, thanks IOMEGA. I really appreciate your trying to help in this matter. Believe me, as a past programmer for the Grumman Aerospace/NASA Gemini program, I'm no light weight at debugging, but this is driving me crazy. The software title is IOMEGA Solutions and it is on a disk that comes with the unit (mind you I ordered a new disk and tried that too).

What is the make and model of the cd-rw??

Also, make sure you clean out your temp and temp internet folders.. Alot of times Windows will take a look in there to speed up installing and, if there is anything in there, it will use that and that is where the corrupted file will be..

The unit is an IOMEGA CD-RW model: CDRW9602EXT3

Thank you..

In your first post you mentioned something about a catastrophic system failure..

Just what happened??

As close as I can find out (family is not telling), I think someone shut down the system improperly. When I started the system I got an error message saying something to the affect of an illegal operation occured opening ATM32.dll; Please reload Windows. Unfortunately I followed those instructions although as I found out it wasn't necessary. That's when I tried to reinstall my hardware that was affected and came to my present situation.

The cd-rw you are trying to install is an external that connects via USB??

Yes, it's an external/USB connected unit.

Okay.. I went through their troubleshooting area and everything there says the drive has to be connected and recognized and then you install the software..

Just cancel the "Found new hardware" option when you connect the drive and install the operating system..

See if that works!!
