unless it is one of the three in ones you cannot use your scanner as a driect fax machine, however by using your scanner and modem together and you fax documents.

First fax the document in with your scanner then using your modem you can fax -

On Windows 98 go HERE (http://www.billsmith7.net/software/w98-fax.html) to learn how to install the faxing software or you may be able to find some good 3rd party software.

If you don't have a dialup modem, you'll need to get one & most of them come with some Telephony package that includes Voice, Fax, and sometimes Data Applications, so after you install the modem & confirm that it works you can install one of these packages and you're all set. These Fax packages will (most of them will) install a "Printer" that is used to transfer text and documents from an application like WORD or a Scanner program, directly to the fax program. This printer is there as an easy application integration method.

If you already have a dialup modem installed, then there a number of FreeWare Fax & Fax/Voice applications that you can find with your favorite search engine, and you'll find they all work approximately the same so just pick the one that gives you the best human interface.
