Ok, my girlfriend's computer is a complete mess first off. I have ran adware scans and checked the start up files but I cannot figure this out. So here it goes. Her interent does not work at all. The only way she can get online is Safe Mode with Networking. And sometimes even that causes problems. I have pinged her IP when she wasn't in safe mode and it is completely dead. She is running comcast cable, no router, one computer. What I don't understand is why the interenet would sometimes work in safe mode...but is completely dead when you run windows normally. She is running XP Pro. I am almost positive she doesn't have SP2. Any ideas would be great...if you have any questions I will get the answers as quickly as possible, but it is hard since it is her computer. If there is anything else you need to know please ask away.

*Edit* I don't know if this means anything or not but she took a screen shot of the Services tab in msconfig and had her hide all the microsoft ones and on each on the status reads "Stop Pe..." I don't know what the Pe word is just something I thought might help

by the way u need to do a virus scan...

For spyware
http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/

and for viruses
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Both spyware and virus scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?NRMODE=Published&NRORIGINALURL=%2factivescan&NRNODEGUID=%7b3B202047-35D4-4DA2-B310-B1DBEC2971F2%7d&NRCACHEHINT=Guest

(note it won't remove any spyware, but save the log of what it finds for incase some mod needs it.)

Ok I will get her to run those proggies. A few questions while I wait. If she runs the virus scans in safe mode, would it kill the virus breaking her comp when it isnt in safe mode? Also, we tried to run that trend anti virus thing, but it is browser based and it crashed, should I try to run it in IE or do you know of any really good freeware anti virus program I can download and send to her. Finally, what the hell does it mean in the Services tab in msconfig when the status says Stop Pe...what does that fully say?

Tell her to go to the Services tab in msconfig, point the mouse cursor at the vertical line on the right of the word "Status," press and hold the left mouse button and drag that line to the right. That will expand the column so the rest of the "Pe" word can be read. She might have to drag other column widths to the left to get enough room to see the rest of the word.

She can download McAfee's Stinger from this page (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/). As that page says, it scans for and removes a number of the most common viruses and variants. If she can't download it, it's just a little over a meg so it'll fit on a floppy and if you both have broadband, you can email it to her.

all programs need IE they utilize Activex with a broadband connection u can run in safe mode and that's usually where the best time to run any virus and spyware scans is in safe mode as this helps find many that were in memory and avoided detection...

If u use firefox, it doesn't use activex so like I said u need Internet Explorer for this...

Also before u do do this what programs did u scan for adaware?

We used Lavasoft's Ad-aware Professional. Did a full system scan, but I suspect that it is a virus that is causing this.

Ok guys, just wanted to tell you that I was able to fix it, we ran the virus scan and it 55 viruses, but that didn't work. The problem was all her services were disabled or not started. I guess viruses caused that I don't know but just incase you need to know for future reference, I started up the correct services to get her interent back.
Thank you all for helping us.
