I have an XP equipped laptop connected to a tower running Windows 98 through an ethernet cable. Is it possible to directly connect them? By that I mean, can I access the tower without going through my wireless network?

Howdy and welcome to CTH:
Yep, as long as your CAT5 cable is a crossover cable..

In addition to the cross over cat5, you'll need to run ICS (internet connection sharing)

They don't need to run ICS if all they are doing is setting up a p2p network !!
It appears by the question psoed all they want to do is access the tower WITHOUT utilizing the wireless!!

My mistake. I assumed that since the computer was 98 they just didn't want to deal with using wireless but still wanted internet access.
