I need some help private ip

Hey guys ive been browsing these forums trying to find the answer to my problem cant really find it. Anyways 2 days ago I was playing Dungeon Siege 2 and someone had connected to the game and lagged me out. I had to shutdown my computer hard and reboot it. After i had rebooted it I noticed that I couldnt connect to the internet anymore. It would say it was connected but would give me a private address which is 169.254.98.188. I disabled my firewall ran virus scans and spyware scans but still the problem persists. I have a netgear router which I reset the config settings for it still doesnt work. I then tryed a direct connection from the cable modem which is a motorala surf board directly to my computer. This gave me a weak connection for about 2 mins and then disconnected. Ever since then it keeps giving me private ip addresses of the same 169.xxx.xx.xxx range. To see if it was the computer or the router or the modem i brought my laptop up to check each thing. The laptop didnt have problems with the modem or the router so im not sure what is wrong with my computer. One other thing I plugged my computer into the router and it connected to it but, there was no internet in the router it was bare so im not sure what else to do. Anyone have any ideas?

The 169 IP basically means that your computer isn't able to obtain a correct IP (for whatever reason). It's not a private IP, it's just a Windows default when there is no IP to be had.

You may want to post this in the Internet forum.

Welcome

Have you tried repairing the connection?
Right-Click on the connection in Network Connections and choose Repair.

Are you using Static IPs or DHCP with the router?
