someone I know has one hard drive partioned into 3 drives..Okay? and on one partition he installed w/98..And it appeared to install ok but you can not access the control panel..The other partitions ( xp & 2000) are ok. I don't know too much more about the pc itself but any suggestions? When he tries to open the control panel nothing happens..He tried reinstalling but didn't help..You can't even see it by going to "my computer" & going thru the drive its on..It doesn't show up. any help appreciated........

For a multi-boot system, the order of installation is important unless you use a third party boot manager such as Boot Magic, so if W98 was installed last without a separate boot manager installed, it's a wonder that it works at all.

Edit: Rule-of-thumb: Installation order = oldest to newest.

The problem could be caused by a corrupt .cpl file, though you'd think that his reinstall of Windows would have corrected that.

Have him do a Find for filename *.cpl This will bring up all files with the .cpl extension. Tell him to double-click each one, one at a time, to open it with the Control Panel, until he finds the one that won't open. He could then use System File Checker to replace the file that won't open with a "clean" one from the WIN98 install CD.

You're very welcome.
That's the ticket.....
Does that mean that his problem is resolved, or just that we might be "getting warmer"?
