D:/ and E:/ have gone missing???

Can anyone help me!! My D and E drive icons have gone missing from my control panels. The lights come on and there is power, but when I put in a disc......nothing??
The same thing happened to my friends computer last week and I had to reformat it for her......she didnt mind as she had hardly anything on it....but me.....it would take me a year to put everything back......any suggestions.....does anyone think it may be a virus? I also cannot install "critical updates"......it gets to the part that I accept.....then it will do no more???
I am getting so frustrated.......please help or suggest...thanks...........

First thing to check for is a virus. Go to Trend's Housecall and do
a scan on C:

Let us know what the outcome is from that.
