Hi Jacquiedmk

Welcome to the forum.

Don't know if I can help with this, but if it is a thing starting from the registry that is causing problems, one can stop any start up items from initiating by using a start up manager or using MS config.

If you do not use a start up manager, by going to
Start/Run and typing in msconfig and clicking OK you will have access to the system. click on the start up tab and uncheck any items that you would like not to start upon boot. It is a trial and error method, and will usually id the app that is causing a problem. Then one can either un install or re install it or both. (do not uncheck power profile, the registry scan (if ther is one), systray, or your AV app) There may be others that you should not mess with, if there are they will be posted by others). The others you can mess with one at a time untill you find the app that is misbehaving on start up

Good luck and post back:wave:

I think you mean VCM ( I may be wrong )
Here is info on VCM .

http://cwdixon.com/support/win98_support/version_c_m.htm
VCM ( Version conflict manager )

--------------------------------------

http://www.kraftig.com/InstallFile/
InstallFile v1.2 [129k] W9x/2k/XP FREE
Have you ever had the problem where you can't run one of your favorite programs because "one of
the dlls suddenly has the wrong version number, probably as a result of the installation of
another program. InstallFile is comprised of two files; Installfile which is a command-line
utility for replacing locked files on the hard disk immediately after a reboot and WInstallfile
which is the same thing just using a Windows dialoge box so you don't have to work with the
command line.

This is caused by a certain type of device being mentioned twice in the System.ini file.

Here's a quote from an MS article with instructions on how to resolve the problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q246479

SYMPTOMS
When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:

A device has been specified more than once in the system.ini file, or a device specified in system.ini conflicts with a device which is being loaded by an MS-DOS device driver or application or a device loaded from the registry file. Remove the duplicate entry from the system.ini file, and then restart Windows.

Duplicated device :VCD
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior:
Click Start, click Run, type sysedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
On the Window menu, click Drive:\Windows\System.ini.
On the Search menu, click Find.
In the Find box, type motvcd.vxd, and then press ENTER.
Type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line that contains "motvcd.vxd." The entry should appear under the [386Enh] section of the System.ini file and appear as "device=motvcd.vxd."

NOTE: If the "device=motvcd.vxd" line does not exist, repeat steps 4 and 5 to find the line that contains "crcvcd.vxd", and then type a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the "device=c:\megaphon\crcvcd.vxd" line.
On the File menu, click Save, and then click Exit on the File menu.
Restart your computer.
MORE INFORMATION
Motvcd.vxd is a virtual device driver used by some Motorola modems; the device should work correctly without reinstalling the drivers.

I'm new here and am not very much of a "geek" As mentioned above, I went to my start up, run, etc and found ArGoSoftMail Server was checked. What is it? I don't remember installing anything like that. I am using Win 98 on an IBM 1410 ThinkPad. I am also getting a: C:\windows\system\rad81157.tmp can not open disc or file error at start up???

Well thanks for all your help. Mosiac1 you helped me find the problem. I did as you said and the message disappeared. The only thing is the modem started to act up and kept going into safe mode. I disabled the modem and sure enough the system worked fine. I replaced the modem and I now have a happy customer once again. Thanks again for all your help. Later.:D
