It's the first tip on this page - (Is it a hardware or software problem)
http://www.betaone.net/forum/archive/?t-7622.html
The second question is, I have read by someone I trust that Google mail pulls a really undesirable on you, yet doesn't tell you about it, should you upload your address book to Gmail. When you do that, Gmail sends a mail to everyone in your address book with several Google ads. I think that's pretty appalling and a good tip to pass on, and I don't actually doubt that person at all, but I can't find anything about it and figure it must be documented somewhere.

It's the first tip on this page - (Is it a hardware or software problem)
http://www.betaone.net/forum/archive/?t-7622.htmlIt won't work. An application can freeze from hardware or software errors (or a combination of the two). Just because the software won't draw any more keypresses from the keyboard buffer, doesn't mean it's crash was caused by one or the other. And besides, the OS is the one that sounds the beep; if it's crashed (from either software or hardware), you won't get a beep. The tip is only really useful if a single application stops responding, and you want to determine if it's just the application, or the whole system; modern OSs (like Windows NT and above) have better task management, and will notify you themselves if a single application has crashed or performed unexpectedly. 5 years ago, it could have been a useful tip.
The other problem with it is, since the OS controls the keyboard buffer, each OS has a different buffer size. In fact, you can change the buffer size with a simple regedit in Windows NT/2000/XP (http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/652/).
The second question is, I have read by someone I trust that Google mail pulls a really undesirable on you, yet doesn't tell you about it, should you upload your address book to Gmail. That's spam, and Gmail would be operating illegally if they didn't warn you of it prior. Of course, a simple way to test it for yourself would be to setup an address book containing only your email, then upload that to Gmail. How did your source find out, what method are they using to upload an address book, and what format/program was it initially in?
EDIT: I just did exactly that. No advertising or anything else from Google. I call 'hoax'.

His story checks out on two three, six and seven, I can't say if it works on number one though.

Wow, oracle, couldn't have asked for a better explanation if I'd tried. I knew this was the place to ask! Thank you. And the keyboard buffer info is interesting, too.
I can't answer about how the import was done; it was said that a friend of this person imported contacts to Google mail and then found out subsequently. I'll pass this information on. Thanks for testing it.
He beat you, Tortanick, but thanks anyway for checking out that page for me.
