Just wondering how people keep themselves safe from airsnort (http://airsnort.shmoo.com/) I know you can do MAC adress filtering but is their any other ways?

Don't use WEP. For home use, it's just as easy to use WPA-PSK, if your router supports it, with an extra-long passkey. It's not foolproof either, but it's many times stronger than WEP.
If you need anything stronger than what your router provides, you'll need to go to the trouble of setting up a VPN.

I'm talking theory here ;) I recently had an idea on to defend against those attacks and wanted to know how good current defences are. I'll look up WPA-PSK.

Yeah, WEP is old. WEP is the wireless network's "No Trespassing" sign. It warns potential intruders your wireless network is private property, so to speak, and implies they will suffer consequences if they cross the line.
But most would ignore 'Keep Off The Grass' signs also.
