go here (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/default.mspx)
Its microsofts website so if you want to give the preview version a try before the release date, this is the place to go legally.
Personally, I am not sure if I will be installing it since only my laptop is compatible but I plan on downloading it.
Remember this is a beta version so download and install at your own risk.
http://www.sharpened.net/images/2005/global/spacer.gifWhat is a beta? Before a commercial software program is released to the public, it usually goes through a "beta" phase. During this stage, the software is tested for bugs, crashes, errors, inconsistencies, and any other problems. Though beta versions of software used to be made available only to developers, they are now sometimes made available for the general public to test, usually through the software company's Web site. However, because beta software is free, the programs usually expire after a period of time. If you choose to test a beta software program, don't be surprised if it has multiple problems and causes your computer to repeatedly crash. After all, it is the beta version. You can tell if a program is still in beta by checking the program's properties. If there is a "b" in the version number (i.e. Version: 1.2 b3) that means it's a beta version.

WARNING: For the love of God, don't install it on a PC you're not willing to format! Yes it's necessary to say that, since some people don't get the definition of 'beta'.

That is what I was thinking. I don't really want to format my computer again. I have done it before and with all the updates for XP that Microsoft has it takes forever to start over again.
Actually now that I think about it, I think the updates take up more space than the O.S. does.

For those not willing to give over a full machine, a virtual machine might work.
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/virtualpc2004.htm
I haven't tried, though I may. And keep in mind even running it in a virtual machine could pose a risk to your data on disk.

How long is it taking people to download?
I ordered the CD because didnt like the sound of 28hours downloading, but will it really take that long? I ordered a new Harddrive and the Vista disk at the same time the Hard disk just came but theres still 25 days left on the vista disk.
I have got a 1Meg connection is it going to take 28 hours to download?

it took me about 5 hour to download but then I was online doing other things at the same time.
my suggestion is to start it one nite before going to bed.

It took me 5-6 as well on DSL also doing other things online. Use a download manager like Free Download Manager in case it stops. Mine stopped several times due to too many connections to the server. So, I stopped a few sections and created a few new sections and it usually worked. If I didn't have to do this, it would have been closer to 5. I also was browsing the internet at the same time. Just do what renegade600 says. There shouldn't be too many connections at that time.

The product key will come with the CD (hopefully). Check your e-mail to see if it sent a confirmation with the key.
Now that is public would it be legal for me to get it off a third party site? I doubt it.
Edit: Sorry, I was too slow. ;)

for those of you who have treid it, was it worth the wait or just a glamorised XP?
Pi rules
June 13th, 2006, 05:50 PM
I'd say it is worth the wait. A lot of the things you'll notice first are just changes in the interface trying to make it look better, but there are some good security changes. I say it's about time. Linux used several of them a long time ago.

thats a decision only you can make. Since its only in beta there will be problems and a seriously lack of drivers - I am having problems with it myself but am still using it. IMO - It is not a glamorised xp. Much like winxp was not a glamorised win98. Theres major changes behind the scene that you don't see or realize.
If you want to try it, give it a shot, besure to install it as a dual boot. If not, make sure you back up anything you cannot afford to lose.

I don't think its a my decission alone kind of thing, many things like greater performance are quantifyable.
As for the austetics that are my decission alone. I'm not really too bothered about them.

I personally like it and i'm using it quite alot now. I dont know if anyone else has found this but surfing the net seems faster than on XP (could be to do with explorer 64 bit) and my wireless connection is slightly more stable. Lack of drivers is my only problem but I expected that with it being beta. So far i'm impressed and cant wait for games using DirectX 10 come out, the graphics potential is amazing apparently.

I wish I had downloaded the 64-bit, but I got the 32-bit instead for application compatibility. Now I realize I could probably just use all those on XP.

Well it has about 5 days left, and then I'm complaining.
I can't find an email address to contact though?
I was tempted to send it to the MSN support address and hope that they forward it to the right department.
Any one know the address?
