Hi BABYCAKES444, Your Startup is very clean, The only thing I see that may be causing problems is the MS-DOS MPU-401 Emulator for MIDI driver (Cmmpu.exe) being loaded in the Win.ini file.
This driver is for Windows 95. It is not needed in Windows 98.
When your system crashes, Do you get any error messages about MIDI?

Hi BABYCAKES444, I see you have the same C-Media driver (cmmpu.exe) installed on this machine also. You may want to consider updating your sound card drivers one of these days.
There are a few things loading at startup that may be causing problems.
Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp and delete this shortcut:
Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
This is a real resource hog and has been known to cause problems. Everything for Office will be avaliable through Start > Programs. If it re-appears after you reboot, open office and browse through the options and disable it from loading at startup.
Next on the hitlist is :) Comet Cursor! Uninstall it!
Then navigate to C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and delete:
[WONWebLauncher Class]
InProcServer32 = C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\WONWEBLAUNCHERCONTROL.OCX
CODEBASE = http://www.virtualvegas.com/cab/WON...cherControl.cab

Hi BABYCAKES444, Do you get any error messages when it freezes?
Start by giving it a 'Good Cleaning'. Go here and download jv16 power tools: http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml
Instructions by AnnMarie..
Install then restart your computer. Shut down everything in systray that will close and make sure that your browser is closed and you are off the net.
When you open the program, click on Registry Tool. It will give you a complete listing of the programs on your computer. Search that list VERY carefully and make sure that you put a checkmark in front of the ones that you KNOW that you dont have anymore (previously uninstalled) then click "Remove". On the same screen, click "Tools" then "Registry Cleaner". Make sure that there are checkmarks in "I want to manually verify deleted entries", "Show why each item should be safe to remove" and "Dont pop up the registry cleaner after scan". Make sure that the other options are NOT checked. Click "Continue", and make sure that all the options in the next screen are checked and then click "Continue" again and let it find everything that its going to. Click "Select", then “Special Select” and click "All items that are safe to remove"" and then "Remove". Close that screen
While you are there, you might as well clean up your drive. Click on "File Tools". Go to Preferences and make sure that you select "Create a backup" Now choose your Source (drive) and select "Find Only Broken Shortcuts". Let it find them, "Select", "All" and "Remove".(at the bottom) Click on Find Broken ShortCuts again to unselect it and then do the same thing for "Temp Files" (dont use the other selections unless you really know what you are doing).
After the above, run defrag. Let me know if it still freezes..

This may be totally unrelated to your problem, but I had a freezing problem that seems very similar to yours. I went crazy for several months with having to wait several minutes for each freeze to end or having to "end task", and the problem was only during surfing sessions in both Internet Explorer and Netscape. Someone on another help forum suggested that it may be "something" searching regularly for a certain type of IP identifier (can't remember the technical jargon), but gave me the following instructions to alter my settings. This solved my problems immediately and I haven't frozen up since! You of course, can go back and reset everything you change if this doesn't work.
I went to My Computer, Control Panel, Network and then found the TCP/IP with my Network Ethernet Card listed, double clicked on that, chose to "specify an IP" and entered the following numbers. Under IP address I put 192.168.0.2 and under Subnet Mask I entered 255.255.255.0
Good luck!
I'm editing to say that this response is for your comp #2 problem. That's the one that sounds very much like my own old problem.

its great to see that there is help out there :) so ive tried specifying my ip and it works great so far but due to security reasons should i obtain my own ip from my provider ? its great to surf the net without a freeze :) woo hooo and like you i have been going for months like this. it is a pain :) thanks for the help.
should i obtain my own ip from my provider ?

I hope I'm reading your post correctly and you're now running without the annoying freezes.
This IP that you've specified has nothing to do with your real IP (the one that shows up when you visit internet sites). If you right click on the computer icon on the bottom right of your screeen and then ask to "show details", your IP address will be the one given to your computer by your own ISP.
As I said earlier, I don't know all the technical terms for this type of IP address or why it kept freezing me up to begin with. All I know is that I've been surfing happily for nearly a year now, since I made the changes I described to you above.
