Anyone know of a good program to do this with? preferably free......I have some home movies as MPG because that's the only format they would rip from the VHS in, I would like to have them as compressed AVI, maybe with a divx codec..........I have tried several programs yet none of them work

Hey!

If you're running Windows XP, theres a good chance that you already have windows Movie Maker. Look for it in your program files. If you have it, simply import said mpg file, save movie file as, and when the compuet promts you for file type go to more advanced options, and choose to encode it as an AVI.

Another great free program is alltoavi - which is a program does pretty much does its namesake.
You can download it here:
http://alltoavi.sourceforge.net/
and simply follow the imple instructions included.

Hope that helps!

ill try alltoavi first, everything from sourceforge seems to work great for me, always has.....but we'll see if it stays that way......I don't want to use windows movie maker, I've messed with it before and I hated it

Errr....this is a common problem.

Often, mpg files are corrupted, meaning they have a loop somewhere and programs cannot read them completely.

If you really don't want to check it with windows movie maker (which really would be easiest), try opening it with virtual dub
http://www.virtualdub.org/

Once you've downloaded the file, open the nom-command prompt version, go to file-->open video file--> and find your mpg file.

Once its finished buffering, see how long the program says your file is. If its too short, you most likely have a corrupted file, which can be delt with, its just a pain in the neck -_-"

But try to convert it with vdub anyway. Once its opened and buffered, go to video--> compression and choose the DViX codec. Then go to file--> save as avi and choose an output place for it.
(Here you will find your second clue if your mpg has problems. If the output file looks too small, then there is most likely a loop somewhere in there).

So, umm....try this out, and get back to me!

EDIT: If vdub gives you trouble, so the same thing with vdub mod also:
http://virtualdubmod.sourceforge.net/

the programs have some differences, and vdubmod might actually encode mpgs better.
(I don't know. I only know that subtitles with vdubmod is NOT worth it)
