Where did my windows desktop icons and task bar go?

I am having this wierd problem where all the icons and the task bar on my (XP professional) desktop have dissapeared. I do get to the log-on screen but after that the only thing on the screen in the (bliss)background wallpaper. I've tried a few things like starting up in safe mode and try to do a system restore but that didn't work. Was the icons and task bar turned off inadvertently? I'm about to wipe the HD and start over but before I do that I was hoping that I could save sometime if it is something simple...

Before you do anything drastic, Click Here (http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm) to open a Kelly's Korner page.

Scroll down to line 195 and in the right-hand column, click on "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" to download a small reg file (you may have to right click it, left click "Save Target As").

Once you have the file saved to the harddrive, run it according to the directions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.
