Distros

I know there are loads of topics like this so sorry.

I am on work experience this week and there people I am with swear by suse.
I have been using since Christmas and there great.

But theses guys told me that I should forget them and move over, I hadn’t even herd much about this distro until then.

Is it pretty much the same as the others?

Also while were on the subject I have been using both distros ubuntu and slackware to see which one I preferred, but I cannot choose, I have herd that slackware is more secure but is there a big advantage with one over the other?
I cannot see one but I’m a noob with Linux lol.

Thanks Eddie.

SUSE is a great windows replacement, its YaST control panell alows you to set up a server/client network in a day from zero knowladge (I did so personally with a file server) I wouldn't swear by it, but for an office environment I'd be very happy with SUSE.

On the other hand SUSE lacks Ubuntu's community and repositorys, and has isn't perticually friendly to anyone who wants to go under the hood. I havn't used slackware so no comparason

Like with all Distros someone I expect someone will come a long and say the exact opposite soon Just give it a try.

P.S. Grats on landing such a good work experiance position

What kind of tasks do you expect your operating system to accomplish?

Thanks, was pleased with my self, got some good software developers to work with. It was all programming PLC's and control systems, interesting, but don't think I will go on to do that.

Well my main complaints about ubuntu and slackware are they don't have drivers for my sound card and I cannot find one.
I just brought Linux Format magazine as it had a free copy of suse with it and a complete beginner’s guide to Linux, thought it might be helpful to have.

Well, I will be using it for the same tasks that I do with XP at the moment. Which are lots of media; I have a huge 10000+ song music collection, need to be able to manage that, also take my Creative Live! 24bit sound card. If any one knows were I can get a Linux driver for it please let me know, creative don’t make one. Lost of web browsing, but I will have Firefox for that, programming and Web Designing, also a graphic program is good to have, I like GIMP so a distro that includes that would be great. I have games but I understand that I will have to keep XP for them. The only other thing is instant messaging, but I will use anything for that, am using trillian at the moment.

Thanks Eddie

- I'm not talking crap GUI; its propa XP style stuff.

It set my network up for me, It even installed my sound card, didnt even tell it two it just did it.
The UI on the OS is amazing, im using gnome, might change to KDE later.

And the multimedia is great, dvd player built in.

Sorry to be a pain but I have had a few problems.
I need FF Plug-ins to do things like play quick time stuff and play embed wave files.
Also is there like a place to get drivers etc. from?
I have back and forward buttons on my mouse that I have become reliant on but they don't work in Linux.
I have found some sites with themes on and managed to get my hands on flash plug-ins etc. of the FF site.

But major bummer is that the sound has gone!!! During the installation there was a sound test and the music played then, but not now, all is quiet on the Linux fount. I have checked all volume etc. and its all up. Any ideas?

Thanks for helping guys

I never tried useing it for a home distro, perhaps I should.

You could try http://www.free-codecs.com/ I used it to get firefox to use Media Player Classic instead of Real Player/Quick time, maby it works for alternatives.

No idea about the sound.

P.S. have you tried XGL/Compiz. Great for showing off to your non tech-friends.

Sorted it now, I had to go into the sound card settings and turn up each channel in there.
6.1 surround sound so the volume was up, just the individual speakers were turned down.

Well I'm virtually 100% moved over to Linux, just need to move my music to a FAT32 partition so I can access it from windows and Linux then I'm done. Just guild wars, Oblivion and Age of empires I will have to leave XP for.

Have set up gaim, FTP, gimp etc. so I'm all ready to go. I do have to say Gimp seems allot better than PSP.

Does Linus handle Raid okay? Just that the only place I could make a FAT32 partition to shove my music is a RAID array. Will I need the drivers?

From what I have heard/read linux can handle RAID arrays fairly well, usually. There might be a problem if you have an odd chipset that is unsupported, but I believe even then you can install drivers via YaST to fix the problem.

I do not have experience with this personally, though.

Well been using Linux for a while now, and I have used Ubuntu Slackware and SuSE.
From a graphical point of view after I have had fun skining them you cannot tell the difference at all.
I've change all the splash screen to say dudeking so really I could pass it off as my own distro, well I woudnt know the difference, you lot probily would lol
