I use Ubuntu myself, it's a nice Linux version, However:

I've hit a snag when using it... No Internet connection. Now the solution to this may be so obvious but I've yet to find it.... can anyone help me out?

Sorry for taking over your thread Ender, I just didn't want to cause inconvenience to other members by making another topic on Ubuntu.

Sorry for taking over your thread Ender lol, I just didn't want to cause inconvenience to other members by making another topic on Ubuntu.
it would be better if you created a new thread. Once threads get more than a couple of posts those who could help have a tendancy not to open it again. Besides it a cth rule

How is your machine connected to the internet? (ie: cat5 ethernet card, rj-11 modem, usb dsl/cable modem, wireless pci, wireless pcmcia/cardbus, wireless usb, ect.)

It's exactly the same as the cable you shown only the cable itself is black, not grey... it goes into the dsl port in my router.

There are two different types of cables in that picture. One is a phone cable (rj11), the other is an ethernet cable (rj45, slightly wider then a phone cable).

If it plugs into your router, I would guess it is an ethernet cable, which will not be hard to get working under ubuntu at all (or should not be hard).

Does your router use a DHCP server?

All I can say about my Router is that it's a BT ADSL Router which has a DSL cable going into a DSL port. There IS an Ethernet port and I got the Ethernet cable with it but I haven't needed it.

Lord Anthrax.
Has this PC ever had internet working with another (e.g. MS?) Operating System?

Typical ADSL connection using an ethernet network.
Phone line - copper wire - House - copper wire - Wall outlet - RJ11 cable - ADSL Modem - RJ45 network cable - Router - RJ45 network cable - PC(s) Ethernet network port.

Typical ADSL connection using a Wireless network.
Phone line - copper wire - House - copper wire - Wall outlet - RJ11 cable - ADSL Modem - RJ45 network cable - Wireless Router/access point - fresh air - PC(s) Wireless network card.

In some cases the Modem and Router are one physical device.

If there is no cable going from the PC to the modem/router and you don't use wireless hardware, then there is going to be no internet on the PC.

My router is connected by a DSL cable. but the Ethernet port on the router doesn't NEED the Ethernet cable plugged in.

A BT Voyager ADSL Router is the one I use.
