Sound Card

What are the steps to trouble shoot a sound card?
My computer works fine but no sound comes from the speakers
(Gateway Computer). There is no speaker icon in the lower right corner either.

If there is no Speaker icon on the taskbar, follow these steps:
Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Multimedia.
Click the Show volume control on the taskbar check box to select it, and then click OK.
You might want to try and remove the sound drivers from Device manager.
Boot the system into SAFE MODE, Then go to Start, settings, control panel. Double click on "system". Click device manger. Click on the + sign next to "SOUND VIDEO and GAME CONTROLLERS". Remove ALL the items listed in this category.

Restart the system. The sound drivers will load during boot and hopefully you will hear sound.
If it's a no go.......
Go back to device manager and verify that the sound drivers loaded. If the drivers DID load, you will see the sound category in the list.
