explorer.exe Error. Please Help...

I have Windows 2000 Professional installed on my system. I have a few programs installed, I have tried to control this.
Now, I have an error message pop up periodically while opening things such as "My Computer". It says:

"explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created"

Then my desktop will flicker black then to the screen with the "Restore the Active Desktop" button. Many times I will click that and the message pops up again. I have scanned for viruses with a program called StopSign, which only detected "potential spyware cookies". I have searched on other forums asking about this, and someone said that it is spyware affecting my system, which I think is not true. Others said it is a corrupt program file, yet the message started far after any new programs were installed.

Please help........

System Specs

OS - Windows 2000 Professional Edition /w SP3 Installed
Processor - AMD XP 1800+ (1.53ghz)
Random Access Memory - 256 SDRAM

Well..

I am running a Raedon 7500, and I don't know what you mean.... it just says "Explorer.exe has caused an error and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

and I don't know what you mean
I take it you mean this in reference to Event Viewer.
I'm in XP right now, but I believe the navigation is the same in WIN2K....go to Start>Settings>Control Panel. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Event Viewer Shortcut. In the left pane, you should see:
Application
Security
System

If you click on each of these, in the right pane you'll see either or all of Information, Warning, Error for various items, and it will state the date and time that these events occurred. If you find one that relates to the date and time of your explorer.exe error message, double-click on the event in the right pane and take note of the EventID number and any message that is displayed about this event. I believe that there is a site where you can look up the various EventIDs by number, but can't remember it offhand.........if I find it, I'll post it here.
