I have a problem where my computer will not detect the router. I got around this by using my mates computer to configure the router, which i only use when i want to play Xbox live. I connect my computer via a different modem and swap them round when i want to. Now my router is displaying a red light on the Internet connection, but i haven't access to anyone elses computer to see what the problem is.

I'm guessing that there is a problem with my ethernet port on the pc, anyone got any ideas how to check this out /fix it?

A clear explanation of the problem you are having:

My computer will not detect my router via the ethernet port. As i am having problems with this router, i can not reset it using this computer

A description of your network:

I have DSL via AOL

Whether you have a router, and if you do then what model it is:

The router i am using is a Linksys adsl gateway, model number wag54gs

The OS(s) you are using:

Windows XP (SP2)

There are some basic questions that frequently come up. It is best to also include the answers to these questions.

What do you have for an IP address?
169.254.148.206 for the ethernet adaptor. i also have two different numbers.
172.203.159.85
172.215.8.21
for two differnet ppp adaptors.
What is your default gateway?
172.203.159.85
Can you ping your default gateway?
sent 4 received 0 lost 4

Also, when i first brought this router it was working ok with my computer. I stopped using it because the connection was not very good and went back to an usb modem instead. i deleted the software on my computer because i was not going to use it again. Then i got a Xbox 360 and set it back up.

169.254.148.206 for the ethernet adaptor. i also have two different numbers. OK. you got this when connected to your router, yes? This is a 'bad' ip address.
Are you sure you are using a good ethernet cable?
You said your xbox 360 works fine with the router, correct? Is the xbox setup for a static or automatic IP?

it is set up for automatic.

The router was working fine this morning. just this afternoon i have had the red light for the internet connection. The DSL light is still green and i am still able to acsess the internet with a usb modem. Just can't get my computer to detect the router...

SO your PC worked with the router till this morning, but now only the xbox works with it. But, your PC works when connected directly to the modem.

Have you tries the ethernet cable you use to connect the xbox to the router between the PC and the router so you can rule out a bad cable. After you switch the cable right click on the network icon in the toolbar and select repair. See how this goes.

Also, when you switch from having the PC connected to the modem to connecting the router to the modem do you power cycle the modem?
