hi, i'm fairly new to computing and have a couple of questions if i may-
I've been saving some favourites and jpegs onto floppy so i can put them in my new pc.
Although i've copied some files and folders from the floppy onto my new c drive, on some of them i get the icon on the new drive and then i get the message SYSTEM CANNOT READ FROM SPECIFIED DEVICE, then the icon disappears and i'm back to square one. Any ideas what's going on??
Also it appears i can't transfer my favourites from 1 pc to another, it appears they are only shortcuts to where i'd saved them on the a/drive. Are the url's available on my c drive somewhere as i deleted them off my a/drive thinking they were copied ok. Also when i've not been actively using my pc for a while it kind of shut's down or goes to standby or something, how do i get it to start back up again?? I've tried all kinds of key combinations but nothing seems to work, i usually end up resetting the pc which can't be good. Appreciate any help thanks neil

Hi Neil - welcome to CTH. Yes, the links to your Favorites will be on your C drive. What OS do you have and what OS do you have on the old PC. Which files (or folders) are generating the error message when you try to open them. Post back some more information and we should be able to help you.
Re, your shutdown issue, are you using a PC or Laptop and what model?

i'm using win 98se on both pc's. The files that i was trying to copy were dwg's and jpegs. Some but not all of the dwg's copied onto the new c drive, none of the jpegs do. If i'm visually copying them into the folder on the c drive, the icon appears, then error " system cannot read from specified drive " then the icon disappears again. I can copy other files onto the floppy and then copy them back. I've got a cd-rw drive (which i don't know how to use yet) so i'll try and copy them onto that to see if it works.
As for the favourites, i copied them onto my floppy then added them onto my new c drive whilst in explorer, using add to favourites. Seeing the folders in the favourite list i deleted them off the floppy only to find that they seem to be links rather than info. Trouble is they are linked to the a/drive. Would there really be no info on my new c drive about what the url's were, that's all i want, just so i can find them again. Hope i've explained that clearly.
My pc is a factory built job so i can't really tell you what's inside, well apart from the spec i ordered. I've changed my power management time-outs now but i still don't know how to get it off standby when it does it.
Just another quickie, i've been checking out internet radio for the first time, just on a normal modem,do they always cut out like that??
Appreciate any help you can give me thanks

Hi again zoodemon - lets get your favorites copied over first. Open Windows Explorer and scroll down to C:\Windows\Favorites. Insert your floppy in the drive and open your Favorites folder. All your links should be in the righthand pane. Go to Edit > Select All and then Edit > Copy. Still in Windows Explorer, navigate back to the Icon for your A drive, click on it and then rightclick with your mouse and choose Paste. All your Favorites should then transfer to your floppy.
Put your floppy in your other PC, open Windows Explorer again and copy the contents of the A Drive according to my instructions above. Navigate to C:\Windows\Favorites and open your Favorites Folder. Position your mouse in the righthand pane, rightclick and choose Paste. The links should now be copied into your Favorites folder.
You can use the same technique for copying your jpegs etc. If you are not copying large numbers of files, you can rightclick on each and choose copy and then paste onto your floppy. You can also drag and drop but I thought the above method might be easier for you. Let us know how you get on.
