for some strange reason, i haven't been able to connect my xbox or ps2 to the interenet. all the other computers on my router work fine except mine and the xbox/ps2. they can not connect, and my computer can only connect to internet explorer. it cannot connect to aim anymore, or firefox, or any other program that you connect to the internet for. i've connected to all these things before and now i no longer can. does anyone think they can help me at all ?
oh and the xbox/ps2 hasnt been connecting for quite some time, and this computers aim/firefox etc. caused me trouble about a month or so after the ps2 and xbox wouldnt connect.

Hi there and Welcome. Could you explain how you are connecting the pc, ps2 and xbox physically to the router?

ive got a 4 port linksys router. ive got optimum online internet service so its broadband. each of the computers as well as the xbox has an ethernet cable connected from itself to the router, so its not wireless.

Have you tried to switch the router off for 20 mins or so and/or reset the router to factory default?
Does your PC still have problems? Does internet explorer work ok?

Theres a tiny little button on the router which you have to press for a few seconds. But if you decide to do it make sure you are able to reconfigure it with you ISP's user name and password (if applicable) and make a note of any ports you have forwarded.
Have you tried re installing firefox? It wont be a fault with the router if internet explorer works but firefox doesn't. Do you have any firewalls running? You may of accidently blocked firefox from accessing the net.
With regards to you xbox and ps2 make sure you have the correct network setting in the consoles network config. If they are set to DHCP you could try assigning them a static IP (which is recomended anyway because you can then forward ports to the consoles IP address). If you need help doing that let us know.
Personally I would do a factory reset first to rule that out (for your consoles) and go from there. Just make sure to configure it correctly if you need to and if your ISP has a user name and password have them handy.

my isp doesnt require those htings. i know that. and aim doesnt work either. aim worked, and i delted it. i re-downloaded it and i couldnt conenct. after firefox wasnt connecting anymore, i delted it and redownlaoded it and had the same problem. what i really want to do is log on with my xbox, so how would i assign them to a static ip? i think i could do it but id rather have help from someone mroe expireienced lol

Right I haven't actually got an Xbox (I have a 360, is it one of those?) but it must be something similar. If you start the console without a game is there any options for network settings? I'll have a look for a guide to do it and i'll post it.
In the mean time do you know your router's IP address (If its default it will be 192.168.1.1). Also can you find out the DHCP range which will be in the routers config page.

By the way at what stage of connecting to xbox live does it fail?
Also what is the DHCP range of your router? And IP address of the router?

192.168.1.1 is the address i type in so i think thats the ip of the router. how do i find the range ? and when i troubleshoot hte connection it says it recognizes the cable is connected but it cant establish a connection

With linksys its usually on the first page. There will be something along the lines of DHCP start IP address and something else which says how many IP's to assign.

Nope not that. Please delete that info using the edit button coz it has your external IP address. I'll post a pic of what it might look like.
Do you have something that looks like this? (http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y1/G_R5GTT/DHCP.jpg)

DHCP Server:

Number of
DHCP Users:
Client Lease Time: minutes (0 means one day)

192.168.1.1 is the full start, 4 users

It definetely shouldn't be that. Your router is 192.168.1.1 so if the DHCP range starts from 192.168.1.1 there will be conflicts. Change the starting IP address to something like 192.168.1.100 and apply. You may get disconnected while your pc assigns itself a new IP address from the router. Then get into your Xbox's network settings and into the IP address section. Use 192.168.1.10 (or anything thats not in the DHCP range ie 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.99) as the ip address. 255.255.255.0 as the subnet and 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway. If there is a section for DNS servers either leave that at auto if you can or change it to 192.168.1.1 for the preffered DNS server. Now check to see if it works.

make the starting ip as .100 but the xbox as .10 ?
G_Dem
July 10th, 2006, 12:03 AM
yep. Thats just so your xbox's IP address isnt in the DHCP range. Otherwise a pc in your house might end up getting 192.168.1.10 too which will cause problems.

tried it, no luck. it says no DNS server addresses were recieved from the DHCP or PPoE SERVER. enter the DNS server(s) provided by your ISP in the network settings menu.
i entered the DNS numbers in where it allowed me to. i think it worked.
acutally it just did. thats awesome..
the only problem that remains is the AIM and Firefox connection, haha.
thank you very very much for the help thusfar though.

No problemo. It might be worth posting the prob with those programs in the software or internet forums on this site as I don't think its to do with the network.

This one (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=19)
The reason I dont think its a network issue is that you can surf the web perfectly with internet explorer but not with firefox. One thing to try quickly though is clearing the cache and cookies from firefox by going to tools - options. Clear the cache and cookies. See if that works.

including internet explorer? If everything on the internet isn't working including internet explorer try this:
Go to start and then run. Type cmd and press ok. Then type:
ipconfig /renew
press enter then type:
ipconfig
press enter and post the results

That doesn't make sense to me how internet explorer can work but firefox can't unless:
Your firefox program is corrupted somehow: Try re-installing with a fresh download of the latest firefox program.
You have a firewall blocking it (which you say you don't)
Apart from that I don't know what else to suggest. Have fun playing your Xbox though.
