Asterisk is awesome

This is just a review of sorts from me. Those of you that may be into VOIP may find this interesting as well. I have been using Asterisk for about a week just playing around with it and let me tell you its very powerful. This open source PBX is jam packed with options and tweaks. The reason I'm posting here of course is that Asterisk does not run under Windows. I will run however on most all the linux distro's. I have been running it under BSD but you can run it under many other linux flavors. Some of the options might be a bit complex for the novice VOIP user but once you get your feet wet there is almost nothing Asterisk can't do. Something you can do that I found totally cool is to get a VOIP enabled wireless phone Samsung makes one and there are a few others on the market. With that phone you can to to any hot spot or places with open access points. The phone then scans for an open access point. When it finds one it registers itself and being "online" then it can look out over the internet for your Asterisk server running at home. Once it finds the server it then becomes "live". At this point you can make and receive calls from the phone. Since its linked to your server it can also check voicemail or any other option you have setup in the server. This basically makes it a replacement for a cell phone, pretty cool ehh. For more info on Asterisk and open source VIOP check out the Asterisk page HERE

Going along with the link you posted, I wanted to post a link to trixbox, formerly asterisk@home.

Quote:
Trixbox enables even the novice user to quickly set up a voice over IP phone system. Trixbox can be configured to handle a single phone line for a home user, several lines for a small office, or several T1s for a million minute a month call center.
