If any of you kind people do help, keep in mind that I'm not the computer whiz you are.....

Here is my problem...

I am home from college for the summer and would like to access the internet from my laptop. My parents recently installed a wireless router onto the family PC so that my dad can get on the web from his laptop in his study (The wireless works for him). I use wireless at school all the time, so my computer works in that department. In fact, I even got online on my neighbor's network for a few seconds to see if it worked, it did. For some reason however, it doesnt work on my home network. When I click on the wirless connection icon in the bottom right of my desktop, it says that the speed and signal strength are fine but my status is "limited or no connectivity". I have done the repair option MANY times and it ALWAYS says that it "could not renew my IP address". I even tried to fix it myself and browzed the internet for self-help tips. I have done the "IPCONFIG /RELEASE" as well as "IPCONFIG /RENEW". It seems that my IP address is 0.0.0.0 while it is doing it and then sets to a real address, so i beleiev those two commands have done what they are supposed to do, it just hasnt helped my problem. I dont know if this means anything, but I connected a cord from my laptop to the router and get the internet perfectly when I do that. I hope one of you reading this knows just what my problem is. Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome,

A couple of things to check:

If Encription is enabled on the router double check you are entering it in your laptop correctly. If its not correct you will experiance what you are describing.

Also check that wireless mac filtering is not enabled. If it is, you will need to add the mac address of your wireless card or turn off mac address filtering.

If you still don't have any joy, you could always assign your laptop with a static IP address by going into the tcp/ip properties of your wireless card and assigning an ip address, subnet, gateway and dns. If you need any help doing this let us know.

G DEM-

Thanks for such a quick response.

As for your possible remedies....

1.) enter what correctly if it is encryted?
i was asked to enter in a WEP (or somthing like that) code in the begining of my attempt to gain access. I asked my dad for it and he (he is not very computer savy) told me that he had a proffesional install the whole thing and that he had no idea what it was. I looked around for what it might be and eneded up entering in the various number/letter sequences on the sticker on the router. the middle one seemed to work becase i did not get an error message and it just seemed to go to the next screen. if this is the problem, how do i find my WEP code?

2.) where do i check/add/change this? basically, where do i click?

I wont bother with the 3rd suggestion until these other two dont work. it sounds rediculously difficult.

Thanks again

Ben

OK what router do you have? To check the encription code get into the router config page by entering its IP address into your web browser. Its usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1. Make sure you do this while connected with an ethernet cable to the router. Then get into the config page, depending on the router you will have to enter a user name and password (usually admin admin or admin password). Then go to the wireless section and write down the encription key. If you let me know what router it is I could guide you through it.

The router:

D-Link 802.11g/2.4GHz

DI-524

OK wire into the router with an ethernet cable. Then type in 192.168.0.1 in internet explorer. You should get a config page. If i remember correctly the user name and password is either admin admin or admin and no password. Then click on the wireless tab. You should have your encription code there or in a security section in the wireless tab.

should look something like this:

Copy the encryption code and then disconnect your ethernet cable. Next time you try and connect via wireless it will ask for the code. Paste it into the box (and the one below it asking you to confirm it) and then press connect.

alright....and thanx, this is extrmly nice of you....

i am into the config page but there is not a encription code in the wireless tab. i can go from "WEP" to "disable" in the security box.....but my dad wants it to be secured. it also says other things in other boxes like....
64bit WEP encryption
Key Type: hex
Authentication: the "open system" option is selected

there are also 4 keys ....the last three are all 0000000000 but the first one is my home phone number

am i on the right track?
