Okay, first of all, I apologize for creating an account for the sol purpose of asking a single question, but I am frustrated to no end with this.

I did a brief search, and found nothing that solved my problem.

My wireless won’t work. It says it’s working when I connect to it from my desktop and look at the settings, but it doesn’t identify the networks trying to connect to it. The light that is supposed to light up saying, “Hey, the wireless is on,” isn’t coming on either. I’m using a generic Quest modem (2700HG-D).

Regular internet works from my main machine (connected via Ethernet cord).

I’ve tried restarting the modem from the inside, and from the outside. I’ve disabled the wireless from the inside and enabled it again to no avail.

I’m using DSL and I have only one other computer using the network. And I know it’s wireless because it says so on the modem. D:

Using Windows XP Home.

Also, occasionally the wireless light will come on. My laptop tries to connect, then it shuts off again (the light).

Is this purely a modem or is it a modem/router hybrid?

Hybrid, I believe.

do you have the laptop in the same room as the modem? If not, try to get as close to it as you can and see if you can connect.

The laptop is always within several feet of the modem.

I believe the modem/router isn't turning on the wireless correctly and/or identifying the computers trying to connect.

Is this a 802.11b, 802.11g or both b and g wireless router? Is the wireless adapter in your laptop b/g or just one or the other? From the laptop when you scan or "view available networks does your SSID show up in the list? Do you have any sort of wireless network security running on the router such as WPA or WEP ect ect?

Ok so your SSID shows up in the list thats a good start. When you click and try to connect what does it do? Do you get an error msg or does it just sit there and never connect? Does the laptop run any sort of firewall such as Norton Internet Security, Zone Alarm, Windows built in ect ect?

When I try to connect, I get a "Waiting for the network..." for about two minutes, then it disappears and nothing happens. No connection or error message.

It runs McAfee and I have the Windows default disabled.

Just for testing turn McAfee off. Also we may need to log into the router and check out the wireless settings. Another thing to look at would be the network properites for the wireless adapter on the laptop. Make sure the power management doesn't have "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" box checked.

Also, if you log into the router, make sure wireless isn't disabled or that it is blocking all requests from ips/mac addresses then you would have to set it to allow your computer to connect through it.
