So who should pay for pulling Americans out of Lebanon: Those Americans? Or you? (you, meaning the U.S. tax payers) (This may apply to other countries people but haven't heard about it yet) I do know the U.S. is responding much slower than other countries in evacuating their people from Lebanon. The reasons are unknown at this time.
This issue of having people pay for their own rescues has come up in many different ways with all kinds of rescues: Hikers plucked from mountainsides where they've become rim-rocked, motorists rescued from blizzard-swept roads, boaters pulled from stormy seas.
What do you think? Opinions on U.S. and how other countries are handling this situation are welcomed.

(It was stated that no American would be refused passage because he/she left checkbook/credit card/money back at the hotel or wherever they were staying. Doesn't mean they will not get billed later.)

Where human life is concerned i dont think money should really matter..
One thing puzzles me what are so many people doing in Lebanon.. what sort of jobs do they have.???
It has always been a risky area yet so many choose to work there......
I dont know as yet the UK situation Nick but i am going to investigate and find out

Update The Royal navy have evaquated 100 today and more to come in the next few days..... At the moment the ports are being barricaded which isnt going to help matters......

Very true indeed, however the posting of political or religious topics might be better taken up at a forum that is more suited for it. For a board like CTH those two topics are nothing short of inflammatory. Those two topics have caused more war and bloodshed among people than any other thing with perhaps money and females coming in a near 2nd. I do see your point and have thought about it very much. The question is do you see my point or have you given it any thought? After all I'm not saying don't post here I'm just saying how about backing off those two topics a bit. Saving those type posts for another forum. I myself am a member of 2 forums on that list and regularly talk about politics and religion. I have no doubt this post will not be received well but there you have it.

I do see your point and have thought about posting here. I catch he!! quite often about my topics but I still have a right to post here. Read some of my other answers as I'm tired of having to explain myself again and again.
Why are we in a discussion about this instead of merely dismissing my post as not interested or reply with your thoughts on the subject. It's that simple.

The quality newspapers in the UK are having a very good discussion about it. The main area of contention seems to be the UK taxpayer having to foot the bill for dual and triple nationality people. I believe dual nationality is not an option for US citizens (and a good idea too, imho).

the main thrust being why should the residents of the UK have their tax money being squandered on peeps who use a British passport mainly for convenience.

The genuine cases deserve succor, something I feel quite strongly about. I don't care if it is the Mountain Rescue Team plucking you from a snow capped mountain range or the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service whisking you away from a massive car crash - as a tax payer you should reasonably expect the governmental services to dig you out of life threatening situations.

We do tend to penalise people after the event if they were wantonly negligent - the message being "we'll save your life but advertise the fact you were a bally fool at a later date".

Thanks Snurfen. I was unaware of that happening in the U.K. and love to stay informed of worldly events. U.S. can hold dual citizenships.

I've heard that the American evacuees must sign vouchers before they can board the ferries or ships.Who picks up the tab for the vouchers is anybodies guess.

Under extreme pressure U.S. backs off charging evacuees even though bill passed a couple years ago made it possible to charge.
The U.S. State Department dropped a plan to make Americans reimburse the government for the transport, but others were asked to sign promissory notes to pay for the trip before they could leave.
I think that dropped also.
Good luck, folks.

It does not matter where you discuss politics or religion there will always be disagreements. Everyone has their owns beliefs. Thats why this is an open discussion forum. If you dont like what you are reading you have a choice to not read it. Personally i like to read about what Nick has to say he reminds me alot of my father. I dont always respond, but i am reading and understanding where Nick comes from. More than once i have seen peolple get offended by what he has to say, or "tired" of reading about what he has to say, but that brings us back to my point of which you have a choice.

I'm honored to remind you of your father, sarahzetta.
He's not a nut case too, is he? Kidding, my dear. Thanks for those kind words.
These topics I start are not meant to be flame wars. They just happen to interest me and thought they might interest others. Not looking for agreement with the way I feel but rather a broadening point of view to make me think outside the box. We can all agree to disagree peacefully with dignity.
I don't think I have ever jumped in a thread to pronounce how dumb it may have been to me. If I don't go along with it, I just stay out and let others make the same choice. The simplicity of it is what drives me coo-coo at times when bad things happen.
Great day all.
