Bear with me, I'm a nurse and know nothing about computers. I keep getting an Illegal Operation Banner, and when I click on "details" it says... IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module KERNAL32.DLL at 0157:bff72849. I have tried one possible solution posted on another board, (possible password list file damaged) and that didn't seem to be the problem. O.K., so what do i do now? Is there any place I can call to speak to an actual person that won't cost me an arm and a leg? Or is there any other "tricks" to try? I would appreciate any comments or suggestions. TIA,
Michelle

Hello Michelle,
Welcome to CyberTech Help. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Ok for the bad news first. This can be a devil to track down. There are links that I could give you but if you are not a geek they won't help much. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/frown.gif The gist of it is that two *pages* are trying to access the same block of memory at the same time. (maybe) :/
Getting to the root of the problem involes some pretty heady trouble shooting steps.
First thing we need to know is when does this happen? When you start IE or shut it down?
A few things to check for.
1.) Do a search (F3) for advert.dll if you find it delete it.
2.) Disable Java JIT Compiler in your browser.
MSIE>>Tools>>Internet Options>>Advanced
Clear the Java JIT compiler box.
3.) Make sure that are no .dll files located on the desktop.
Start>>Settings>>Folder Options>>View
Place a check in the show all files box.
If you find a .dll file on your Desktop move it to the My Documents folder for temp storage.
We also need to know what version MSIE you are useing. Click on help and then about to get the version number.
And lastly for now. Have you made any *major* changes to your system as of late and is this the fix that you tried?
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following steps:
Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
In the Named box, type *.pwl, and then click Find Now.
In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete. Repeat step 3 until all of the .pwl files are deleted.
On the File menu, click Close.
Restart the computer. The password list files are re-created automatically when you log on to Windows.
Download the Mspwlupd.exe file from the following Microsoft Web site, and then double-click the file to run it.
NOTE: You do not need to perform this step if you are running Windows 98.
The following file is available for download from the Microsoft Download Center. Click the file name below to download the file:
Mspwlupd.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95/update/95/w95/en-us/mspwlupd.exe)
Hang in there we WILL get to the bottom of this, and you WILL learn a bit as well. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

O.K. First, I would like to thank you for your timely reply.
Now I will try to answer your questions.
1. This happens when I try to enter a certain website (funbug.com) and at times, happens when I exit IE.
2. Search(F3) came up with nothing.
3. Disabled java, nothing.
4. Don't think DLL files on desktop, but how would I know? Would it say DLL files?
5.I have MSIE 5.0
6.The only change was a new mouse, but, this was happening before I replaced the mouse.
7. The tip you posted WAS the one I tried, to no avail.
Also, I don't know if this is related, but I am unable to download anything off the net. Also, can not open anything in control panel, because 32 DLL is "missing"???

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:Program Files Internet ExplorerSetupSETUP.EXE" /g "C:WINDOWSIE Uninstall Log.Txt"
Paste the above into the run menu box and choose the repair option.
The standard dll icon looks like a white sheet with meshed gears.
Back up your important data in the event it comes to having to reinstall windows(last resort).
If this repair does not work our next step would be to look for and replace the missing files. This still may not cure the problem as the step after that is to update the Video Drivers.
You know your system best. It may be in your best intrest to reinstall Windows. I would choose this option if I did not have very many added programs and tweaks/upgrades to the OS.
I would also suggest an upgrade to MSIE 5.01 SP1 but its not a good idea when you have other system problems to make such a major change.
Post back with your results and we will take the next step.

Hi! No Luck. Unable to cut and paste, so I copied the rundll32-thing into the search box. This is what it said...
Can not find the file 'rundll32' (or one of it's components) Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all required libraries are available. (and I'm positive I typed it in correctly!)
Also, unable to reistall Windows. It says there is a newer version already on your computer, or when I go to set up, it says somethings running in my control panel (which I can not get into due to the above missing file)
Thanks again for all your help. It is so much appreciated.

Edit: You need to place that string into the Run Menu Box not the search box. Try that first, K?
Can't cut and paste either? WOW
What is the type and model of your PC?
What version of Windows 95 are you using?
Do you have a true Windows 95 Cd or a Recovery CD that came with the computer?
Can you receive email with attachments? (you may need a boot disk)

Let me digest all of this and I WILL get back to you ASAP.
While we wait you need to have your ISP's information. IAW their phone mumber that the computer dials, your username and password. You may want to write this down. Also if your ISP uses a special program you will need a copy of that. AOL for instance uses a special program, there are some others as well.
Also can you get the exact wording of the error message that you recieve when you attempt to *reinstall* Windows?
What we are looking to do is a clean install, you know make it like it was when you took it out the box for the first time. So this means you will also need your product key for windows, should be on the Manual.
Anyone feel free to jump in at anytime. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif

Tram, you're doing so good by yourself I haven't needed to step in - until now.
I think you're starting to think this as well but no cut'n'paste is a symptom of windows overinstall with IE5 installed is it not? hence "but when I put in is said ther is a newer windows 95"
My 1st step would be uninstall all Internet Explorer versions, then try overinstall of windows, then reinstall IE.
Michelle, please try to be as specific as you can with the error messages your system is giving you. Some of what you are saying makes sense to us but it makes us have to assume the messages are what we think they are, rather than what we know they are.
As for your ISP details, go into My Computer/Dial up networking, right click on the connection to your ISP, click on Properties and copy down every setting you can see (including under Server Type and TCP/IP settings) Make a note of what is in every check box and field.
As a worst case scenario, we may need to guide you through a reformat and reinstall of Windows. Is the system still "shop-standard" (no additional/changed hardware - modem, video card/soundcard etc?
Do you have driver disks for your hardware?

Before you un-install IE5, first make a copy of your FAVORITES so you don't lose them. You will find it as a sub-directory under Windows on your C drive. Just copy it to a floppy or something.

1.) Iexplore causes a page fault.
2.) No Control Panel access.
3.) No cut and paste function.
4.) Unable to download
5.) Missing run32.dll ??
6.) can't load a file to a floppy disk
7.) Can't reinstall (error message about a newer version present)

5.)Checked desktop for dll files
6.)failed reinstall
7.)New mouse is the only mod
System specs
1.) Pentium 1 mmx 200mhz
2.) 48 MB ram
3.) Win 95a (?)
4.) MSIE 5.0
I think we should attempt to do a clean install of windows.
OK for a few quick questions.
1.) You said that you tried the password fix. If you can't download from the net how did you get the needed file?
2.) You said that you have this posted at another board, can you provide a link so we don't waste time duplicating effort?
3.)Since 96 how many time have you had to reinstall windows?
4.) Are you having fun yet? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
Edit: I checked that site and they do use Java. I wonder if you delete your cookies from that site and then try to enter it if that would allow you in?
Edit:II Ok just got your PM http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/redface.gif And you are welcome, we are here helping because, believe it or not, we enjoy this sort of thing. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif )not the problems the answers(
You really don't have a *newer* version of Windows this is a quirky error message.
You can try to run an Antivirus program, if you have one, do a full scan. I do not believe that in your case there is a virus.
If you want to invest just a bit more time you can try to uninstall MSIE 5. I am really leaning to a format/install. I would just like to add that in most cases I do not like to do this as I view it as a cop out. In your case you have a multitude of problems and I really am at a loss. (but we have plenty of help http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif )
That being said... you are the boss so what would you like? Besides a new working computer and all your bills paid? http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/wink.gif http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

1. Password fix.. printed out instructions from www.windows-help.net. (http://www.windows-help.net.) In Windows Explorer select /Windows folder. Press F3. In named:box type *.pwl. Click find now. When list of files is displayed, delete all.
Problem was, no files found, so unable to delete.
2.No replies to post on Windows-help.net, so I found this board, and have only dealt with you guys.
3. Since 1996, have Never had to reinstall Windows.
4.I am having fun, you guys are great.
5. Wonder what would happen if I threw entire computer out of second story window onto the street?
6. Have Norton anti-virus, will run it.
And Finally... My Error Messages =
1. When I insert Windows 95 CD that came with PC,
" This CD-ROM is from an older version of Windows than the one you are presently using. Setup functionality from this disk will be disabled."
Then, when I... close out screen, then Right click on the CD-Rom icon, then right click on Setup icon, I get
"Some Control Panel or device settings have changed since you last started Windows. Close all of your programs, restart Windows and then run Setup again.

Hi all. I've been following this thread. tramtwo has done a very good job of helping, better than I. That's why I stayed out of it. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif But now it seems that a install of windows over the top of the current installation should be tried. Seems like there is nothing to lose at this point.
But before you do this, save all of your personal files and your FAVORITES file for IE5. Then uninstall IE5 first. Now you can install windows over the top. When installing, a window will come up and say that a file/driver is older than the one that is currently there...do you want to keep the newer one? Always keep the one that is newer.
Be sure to have all of the install disks for video, sound cards and any other disks with drivers and have the disks of the programs that you had installed in windows. You may be asked for one or two, ya never know what windows is going to do.
If this doesn't work, you will need to get Windows off your hard drive. You can either just delete the Windows directory and then install it new, then reinstall all the programs you had on there. That way all of the personal files and settings for the programs will still be there.
OR...you can format the intire hard drive and then install Windows fresh and clean, and all of your programs too. This is the way I'd do it because it's the best way to be sure that you clean everything up. You get a fresh new installation with no troubles of any kind.
But remember that you need all of installation disks for video and sound cards and any other hard ward that's in your computer. Windows may need you to provide the drivers with a floppy or CD.
I've been there done that in your case. Some gurus think that the hard drive should be reformated at least once a year. I don't think that needs to be done. But what you are discribing, it seems the best thing to do. If you don't know how do do this, or don't think you can make it all the way through the install of Windows and programs, please find someone to help you out. Or go for it yourself and just come in here and ask for our help.
Hope this helps you out. Let us know what you decide. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif
BTW, if you have more than one partition on your hard drive, say D drive, copy the Windows CD contents to a directory on D drive and install Windows from there. Create a new directory and name it something like win95, copy them there. Copy it before you install over the top, or before you format the C partition. You'll be clad you did.
The reason to uninstall IE5 before you re-install is because windows95 installs IE4, and you cannot do that or it will screw it up good. Just install windows, then install IE5.

Tram, well done mate, stick around though, there's more to do yet...
Michelle, a reformat of your hard drive and reinstall of W95 WILL solve your problems without buying W98.
I cannot guarantee that an OVERinstall of W98 on top of the current messed up W95 will solve anything.
If you have gone ahead and bought W98, there is no harm in attempting the overinstall, if it works, great, but be prepared to need to reformat and either 98 or 95 "CLEAN".
Mishy's article on re-installing Windows (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/Pages/Articles/ReinstallWindows.html)
Here is another site with a great guide http://www.sybercom.net/jtmurphy/page6.htm to reformatting and reinstalling Windows.
As Junky says, backing up existing files/drivers/settings is important here.
We will be happy to assist in locations and names of files you will need to back up.

Hey smrufy,
My brain cramp comes from the fact that...
1.) we can not download.
2.) have no access to the control panel.
3.) can not add files to a floppy disk.
How would one go about useing fdisk in this case? If there was a bootdisk this would be easy.

Just finished reading this thread. Great job by all in attempting to solve this problem.
I have a friend that has what sounds to be the identical machine. He had one major problem that did require re-install of Win95. Lo and behold, his machine shipped with WIN95B installed and and WIN95A CD. He had to reformat and fdisk before anything would reinstall.

Loosescrew, I was wondering that myself but thought, No way, that just couldn't happen but it obviously has here as well.
the only explanation I could come up with was that somebody HAS done an overinstall of "b" over her "a" at some point but that was discounted a couple of posts ago.
Tram, I am going to have to rely upon the chance that Michelle can get to another PC to download a decent Bootdisk.
Most of what we are going to need to do (backups etc) will be from a DOS prompt.

Hi smurfy, the following is the best I can remember, it's been along time:
Windows95b cannnot be installed over the top of Windows95 or Windows95a without altering some files on 95b install floppies first. I've done this procedure before and it's somewhat tuff to do. Windows95b has been programed not to install as an upgrade and sees it as an upgrade if you try to install over the top of an older version of Windows.
It can be done but it takes some extra work to do it. So my hunch is that Win95b has not been used to do an over-install of a current installation of windows. If I'm mistaken, someone please help me out here. http://www.cybertechhelp.com/ubb/smile.gif Just trying to help.

Yeah Junky you are right, bad choice of words on my part should have said "re-format and install".
I think what HAS happened here is the shop this came from bulk installed W95b on all their systems and shipped them out with a 95a CD as Loosescrew implied. Now if this is the case it
a) is absolutely ludicrous on their part!
b) makes life extremely tricky for us.
This is even worse that the OEM versions that ship with recovery CD's. At least they are normally the correct version of Windows, even if they are cut down.
I guess we now just wait for Michelle to get back to us for the next step, depending on whether she has tried a W98 overinstall or needs to reformat.

I see what you mean now smurfy. If that's the case, like you said, Michelle will need to use the win98se upgrade. It's cheaper than the full version, and you get 99% of what the full Windows version has to offer, just a few minor things missing...no big deal.
Hope she makes it back here.
