Cannot run 2 applications together - PLEASE HELP

Something is happening with my PC and I am currently unable to run more than 2 applications together (right now, even having two programs opened at the same time turns my PC very slow), and this is news to me, because I never had any problems until today.

Is there any way I can sort this out? Why did it slow down so unexpectedly? How can I verify what is going on?

Please help me... My PC runs on Windows 98 and as mentioned, it never had issues running several programs (e.g. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet Explorer, etc.) all together.

By the way, I am not very computer literate, so clear instructions will be very appreciated.
