Annoying Bootup Problem
I have encountered a most annoying problem at bootup.
All shortcuts appear on the desktop.Of the four items in the Systray...the Antivirus program, AVG , does not load. The hourglass pointer freezes and the computer hangs. To 'unhang' I illegally shut down the computer and will go through the normal rigmarole of 'windows was illegally shutdown.....bla ,bla, bla.It goes through Scandisk and the antivirus program is loaded. I am now able to work.My questions now are: Is there any way to avoid the illegal shutdown , and what is the probable reason for this development. Thanks for any info. Happy New Year. |

Hi newbie24 - welcome to CTH and a Happy New Year to you too
![]() It might be a good idea if we have a look at your startups to see if we can identify a conflict. Go here and download and run Startup List. It will generate a log file. Copy the log and paste it back into this thread.

Hello ,AnnMarie thanks for your advice. I do however have
a problem : I am an old guy who just bought a computer, a couple of computer books and taught myself a few things...enough to navigate the web and understand computer basics. I am terrified by Dos and MSdos and shy away from any application that they involve. The downloaded file.....Pkunzip comes in MSdos and to open same leaves me sweating. I wonder if the startuplist from Msconfig will suffice. [ My O/S is win 95 which does not have MSconfig...the latter I downloaded and installed ] Do bear with me and reply.Thanks. |

FREEZIP is a free, small un-zipper.
Click the "FREEZIP" link above, and when the web page loads, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "FreeZip v1.4.9". When the next page loads, scroll to the bottom and click on "Download 'FreeZip v1.4.9 (250kb) ". When downloaded, double-click it and it will install. Then you can right-click 'Startup List' and choose "Unzip here" It will then unzip to that folder. Double-click "StartupList.exe" , and it will create a "Startuplist.txt file. The "Startuplist.txt" is the reference list to all start-up and running programs. You can send the "Startuplist.txt" to someone to inspect and advise. Copy and Paste it into a reply here for the lovely Annemarie to look at. You may need to copy and paste it in two halves, as it may be too big for one post. Happy New Year to you and to Annemarie. |

I have a sneeking suuspicion that there is a conspiracy
between AnnMarie, ThunderDog and Mike to make me computer literate. Be warned : It's not often that Old Dogs learn new tricks. Thanks for your suggestions guys...still afraid and unable to do the things you suggested I decided to try something and it worked. Don't ask me why or how.. it's just that wild shot that hit the target. ....I ran Scandisk Full Scan....took ages to finish; shut down the computer and went to bed . Booted up on New Year's morning and mysteriously the problem no longer exists. It's now day 3 and counting. Enjoy the new Year guys. |
