Need help to connect to the internet???

Does any one of u know any thing about linux networking?
I had been trying to get internet access into my linux installed computer but it is of no use.Things to mention is that I already have a router which is compatible with any operating system containing TCP/IP and my linux, which is a FREESPIRE has an IP options but couldn't make it work. I tried many processes, but none of them had worked. So plz help with the configuration or the setup of router into my linux installed computer through which I can get to connect to the internet. For further questions or comments, e-mail me at **email removed**

My own experience with routers setting up linux,
Is your router giving you an ip?open terminal and type"/sbin/ifconfig" without the """" marks. What is the output?
