I have a single hard drive partitioned in three. C:2gb FAT, D:2gb FAT, and E:9gb NTFS. C: is jammed full and I can't seem to find anything to move in order to make room for MSoffice on C:. I've tried installing it on D:, & E: but it seems to ignore my requests. I also tried resizing C: with partition magic but it suggests it is at it's maximum at 2gb.
Is it possible to increase this partition size?
Is it possible to install MSoffice on D: or E:?
Thanks for any suggestions or help on this matter.

Hi! Welcome to CTH
You can install Office on any partition/drive you tell it too? When you say it won't let you? When Office comes up and indicates that it will install in the default directory c:/Program Files, just change the C: to a D:
Partition Magic Ver 8.0 supports up to 160 GB drives. Also if you're using Norton System Works, antivirus, whatever, it has to be shutdown before using PM. Otherwise, PM should be installed from DOS. Norton locks certain files and will not let PM access them.
What version are you using?
Also you say FAT is that FAT 16 or FAT 32?

I have tried to install MS Office to a logical partition also, but this does not seem to be a viable option for the Office Suite....seems it has to install on the partition that has an operating system.
I am assuming that your C drive is formatted FAT16 for Windows NT, and in order to change the partition size limit to 4G rather than 2G, you would have to increase the cluster size. I believe that Partition Magic has an option to change Cluster Size for FAT16 (and FAT32), but I have never tried it so I don't know how successful it is at changing cluster size without destroying data.

As an addendum:
I had mentioned to a friend some time ago that I could never get Office to install on a data partition.....he has just finished building a computer for someone and was in the midst of installing the software on it when he recalled my having said that and so attempted to install OfficeXP to a logical drive........and it worked for him.

Interesting, I have O2K installed on a logical drive. When it installed it does place certain system files in the Windows directory.

Many thanks for your attention to my problems here. As I am running a small retail business on this computer I will hopefully be able to retry the process late tonight. I will post the results of that effort and answers to your questions then.
Thanks again !

You're very welcome, magpies, and do keep up posted as to your success or lack thereof.
Interesting, I have O2K installed on a logical drive. When it installed it does place certain system files in the Windows directory. That's the Office Suite that I could never get to install on a logical drive, although I have been successful at installing other proggies (games, esp., as they take up a lot of space) to a logical drive and yes, they do place certain files in the Windows directory in the operating system partition.

I'm sure you did, but did you close everything down especially AV program prior to the install???

Yep, I did. It's no biggie, was just something I found was kinda odd. When I uninstalled O2K and then installed OXP, I didn't attempt the logical drive thingie again......I should give that a try one of these days and see what happens.

Thanks again, it did finally take on the E: drive.
In C & D properties it says only FAT, I assume that is FAT16. The program I was attempting to install was MS office 2000 premium.
The Partition Magic version is 6.0. I haven't re-tried the partition re-sizing but would if I new it to be safe relatively easy. I still have next to no free space on C:.
As it urned out, selecting D or E within the install wizard didn't seem to be acceptable. Changing the C: to a D: or E: on the command line of that screen was acceptable, accept that it still required 63 mgb of space on C:.
I happened to be very close to that and so found a few more bits to dump and got room enough for the install on E:.
I still can't figure out what is occupying all that space on C:
Thanks for your help
