I have Win 98SE o/s. When I leave the computer idle for a while, the monitor goes off but when I move the mouse, it comes back on again. Sometimes, if the gap is long, it does not come back on. The only way I can get it going is to restart the computer. Is there a keybord tweak I could use to get it to come back on without having to restart the computer? Thanks for any help.

The only way I've fixed a monitor with a problem like that is to set it not to turn off (except when I manually turn it off). An added benefit is that monitors, like TV sets, seem to last longer the less they're turned on and off.
To set the monitor not to turn off automatically, go to Control Panel>Display Properties (or right click an empty area on the desktop, left click Properties). Click on the Screensaver tab and then on the Settings button. Set the monitor to "Never," click OK and OK.

"luzchurch" try this:
Start>Control Panel>Power Management>Power Schemes tab, and select never turn of monitor.
Hope this helps...

In the control panel, I selected the Power option icon and the Power schemes tab:
Under power schemes I find these options: settings for home/office desk, portable/laptop and always on. Mine is set for home/office desk
Below this there are the following defaults:
turn off monitor-never, turn off hard drive-after 45 mts, system standby-after 45 mts
In the power scheme choices should I select always on?
Would running a screensaver solve this problem? Right now I don't use a screensaver.

Set everything to Never and see if the problem disappears. If it does, you can go back and re-enable Standby and see if that creates the problem again. If so, you'll know you have one of those systems that just doesn't deal well with Standby. It's not uncommon.
