Hello guys,
Sometimes when I try to download things, the little quicktime logo comes up and then it says it does not have the software installed to run this operation. This problem is happening more and more. I don't want Quicktime to do anything. Any ideas on how to stop this? I have unistalled Quicktime and then nothing happens as far as downloading. Do I need to change some settings? If so, how do I do this?
Thanks, John

What sort of things are you trying to download?

Hi Smurfy,
One thing I tried to d-load was Mrtcp from DSL Reports. First came the Quicktime Q, then an image of broken film, then the words, This program does not have the software installed to perform this operation. It goes on to say that the software to perform this operation is not available. I then went to NONAGS and clicked on a game to download. Up came the normal window that says save to disk or run from current location etc. This is what it has always done. So I thought Mrtcp is corrupt or something, but this Quicktime problem has happened on other downloads too, but I can't recall just which ones. I just knew it was time to call on you. Does this info help you to resolve my problem?
Thanks, John :)

Which browser are you using?
If it's IE
Go into Windows Explorer, look in View>Options and go to the file types setup to see what programs are associated with .zip - I have a suspicion it's QuickTime.
If it's Netscape
I've got a potentially easier way of finding the associations out than going through the helpers in the preferences under the Edit menu
http://members.aol.com/stevedbentley/sniffer.htm
look in the bottom section and look at what file types QuickTime is trying to deal with. I don't think that that section is available on the PC version of IE but feel free to try that first.

Hi Steven,
I have ie 5.5 and I did what you said and when I found zip, all that I could find was my free zip info. There wasn't anything about quicktime there. Any other ideas?
Thanks for your help, John :)

What happens if you do the download by right clicking the link and selecting Save Link As?

Hi Steven,
That worked just fine to right click. It seemed to save a step or two in the downloading. Is this the recomended method for downloading?
Thanks much, John

It's how I do it :)
It may be the way that the website's server is set up that's directing the download to QuickTime, their MIME Types may be set up strangely.
Anyway, glad you're sorted :)
