A friend has asked me to help install a new HP printer on his Gateway computer(around 8 years old)
The printer has its own driver CD as well as the installation CD,but, for some reason, it will install the drivers perfectly well but not the printer - HP8200.
Trying to double click printer icon in control panel brings up - illegal operation and will be shut down.
After that - nothing!
The dvd tray has also decided to exit every 30 seconds or so!
Gateway EMEA
10 Gb
128Ram
Win 98 2nd edit
That,s all I know.
Any help will be gratefully accepted

What is the specific model of the printer? ie, is it a laserjet, deskjet, or other. Exact model number will help us help you. HP's support returns 176 entries for HP8200, from every category.

I can only give you the information received that it is a Photosmart 8250 with its own driver CD as well as the installation CD.
Thanks

Are there any error messages associated with this printer at the time it refuses to install? Have you checked device manager for any yellow splats that are associated with this printer?
HP offers several solutions but need more info to further persue this topic.

So far, I understand that clicking on Printers icon in Control panel brings up - illegal action this must be shut down.
I will not be able to give more info until next week when I will see for myself what is happening and I can check on device manager etc.
Thanks again - see you next week hopefully
I do not know if the installation has been done correctly yet

Hi Photolady,
I have just found the HP site for problem installations but I will still need your expert advice after I have tried the Gateway comuter.
Many thanks

Hi Photolady,
The problem seems to have been solved by disconnecting the printer then uninstalling all components through add/remove, then rebooting and turning off the resident programs
Then installing the printer drivers, rebooting and returning the resident programs and rebooting .
The problem now is that the shut down procedure still hangs on occassion.
Tried disable fast shutdown but this is not available on sp2
