Red face CPU won't start up. Newer computer, help!

I recently borrowed my boyfriends computer while he's away 'cause it's way better than mine.
I hooked everything up and the CPU won't start up, the screen say "off mode in 5 secs".
I tried flipping the switch in the back of the CPU and it just makes a little noise (while shutting off) but that's it. There is a green light on inside the CPU itself, I've also tried plugging it into different sockets.... help!

Well, lets knock out the basics...
1. The computer and monitor are plugged into known good power outlets.
2. The monitor cable is plugged into the back of the computer. (Is there more than one place it can fit, if so have you tried both places?)
2. The little switch in the back of the computer is pushed to on ( a 1 rather than the 0)
3. The power is on to the monitor and you see a little light on the front of the monitor.
4. Press the power button on the computer box itself, and watch for lights on the front and any noises, like fans, beeps, that kind of thing.
5. Come back here and tell us what happens.
