usb ports inactive
Running ME, There where 2 files open from an external jump disk. I pulled out the jump disk and an error message appeared and indicated that I should have ask to safely remove hardware first (sorry don't recall exact wording) and hit any key to proceed. I hit a key and now none of my usb ports, (4 on Sony monitor and 2 on front of and 1 in back of desktop) work.
I have gone to control panel, systems, device manager, USB controllers. The USB Root Hub and the SIS 7001 PCI to USB open host controller both indicate that they are working fine. I attempted to reinstall the drivers for each but they indicated that the latest drivers were installed and so I chose to use them. I prefer to be wireless both mouse and keyboard but receivers are usb as are several other hardware. Do you have any advice on how to get them to work. I would appreciate the assistance. |

Oh I hate asking this question... have you rebooted? If so, then:
Go back to device manager, delete the USB ports and reboot. On reboot, the computer will reinstall the ports. Let's see if this takes care of it. |

Thanks for responding.
I have rebooted after deleting and the ports were installed but this did not solve the issue. Any other ideas? Thanks |

Ok, to recap, you accidently unplug a USB jump disk with a couple of files still open. You got the traditional 'shouldn't have done that' message. From that moment forward, none of your USB ports work. You have deleted all USB entries from Device Manager and rebooted. The USB devices were rediscovered and reloaded. But, they still don't work.
Are you just testing them with the jump drive, or are you trying the mouse/keyboard as well? And, I guess we might as well get the formalities finished: what make and model computer is this?
