I was given a friends old laptop and when I turn it on it says missing operating system. It's a IBM Thinkpad 1412. Any suggestions?

I do have a Windows 98 startup disk, but I can't figure out how to re-install with it (if I even can.) I also downloaded PC Inspector File Recovery, but without the os it won't do any good.:curse:

Howdy:
Are you referring to the floppy bootdisk here or an actual Win98 install cd??

That will simply get things setup to install and operating system.. without an install cd, you have nothing to go on/with or install !!

I have xp but it stops a little ways through and says there's not enough memory. It says there's only 32 MB of memory and it needs 64 MB or something.

64megs won't even hardly run it.. you need at least 256megs of ram with 512megs being better!!

So is there a reason why it so little memory? Or is there a way that I can increase the memory. I've got 2 thinkpads, both from the same guy, is there any way I can expand the newer one with the older one?

The amount of memory is probably what it came with to begin with.. As for increasing it, you would need to search IBM's site for the make and model to find out exactly what it can take and how much..
Looking on Crucial's site, the maximum memory it can hold is 256megs in 128meg chips.. That means you would have to buy TWO 128ram chips..
As for installing them, you need a service manual to find out just where the ram is located and how to access it.. On some laptops, you have to completely remove the keyboard and a few other components to get to them..
