Okay so I have this computer which I salvaged in my room, it has Windows 98, 3 Gigs of Memory, 64 MB of RAM and a crappy video card. Generally a bad computer in general, but all I really want it for is MSN and Word. So anyways, it was running okay, crashing occasionally and freezing if I ran too many programs etc :dizzy: ... (btw, if anyone can recommend a solution to the crashes and freezes that'd be great). So one day, I boot the old girl up and I get a error message saying: Msgrv32 followed by MSGRV32 caused a segment not present fault in module SETUPX.dll at 0002:00005701, this message is followed by a lot of computer code and script which I dont understand but will be more than happy to provide, if it helps you solve my problem.

This message pops up everytime I start up the computer now and always just before the windows starts (so I have the background, but no icons, no start menu etc..), and when I click on CLOSE or the X in the top right the computer like cancels start up. It just sits on that screen, and when I hit CTRL ALT DELETE, it shows no programs running. So it hasnd frozen per se, but its just not moving lol. Can anyone help me with this problem? I would really appreciate it, because I want to have a computer in my room and not deal with like trying to get a chance at the family unit.

Thank you very much for any help you can provide me.

Looks like that file is damaged. Here's the microsoft article on fixing it (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306618).

Files do get corrupted... You don't have much memory (RAM) installed. So, you start using memory by running programs. If you run out of that 64M, then the computer starts using the hard drive as extra memory. If your hard drive is flashing all the time, you are really taxing the drive and contributing to file errors. I would add memory, get it up to 128M for starters. You back up your data right? I'm not saying your drive is dying, this is probably just normal corruption, but you should be doing backups anyway.

:D Ya, i'm really going to have to buy more RAM once this problem is fixed.

Umm, Roadrunner I have a problem, I get to the step where it tells me to type rename setupx.dll setupx.old and when I press enter it tells me that the file is missing, so I pressed on none the less and got right to the end, pressed y and then enter and it did a searching thing and then told me that there are no matching files... So I reboot the computer, but my original problem persists, the error pops up again..Am I doing sometihng wrong maybe?

hi
look for ext.exe and precopy1.cab in the computer

if you have both, you could run SFC in windows, or EXT in MsSDOS and extract the missing files.

if you did not find precopy1.cab, you would need the 98 cdrom to extract from..
