with all the problems with laptop batteries lately it makes me wonder about how safe they really are.

I found the following article in the wired site that explains about how delicate they really are that if theres any type of damage, there can be major problems. See this for more information (http://www.wired.com/news/wireservice/0,71659-0.html?tw=wn_index_10) it can be an eye opener.

But the batteries are also delicate. Manufacturing contamination caused the overheating that prompted the recall of nearly 6 million Sony-made batteries in the past two weeks from Apple Computer and Dell laptops.

Somebody needs to invent something better than batteries.....big, heavy, expensive, don't work well.......I saw on history channel be4 that there are tiny motors that run at 1.5 million RPM, they think if you put a bunch of those together it could possibly make a tiny generator of sorts....idk, but someone needs to make something better than a battery
