How do I fix Character typing problem

What I type on my Wireless Sony keyboard are not the characters that come up on the screen or correct commands. I changed the batteries. I purchased downloaded and ran the latest Norton Antivirus. I have windows defender loaded and running. I would appreciate any thoughts and ideas! Thanks!!

If you're running Windows XP, go to Control Panel>Regional and Language Options>Languages tab>Details button and make sure the correct language is selected on the Settings tab.
