This is the only place I can figure to post this here, if it's not could a mod please move it to the right location? Thanks!

Currently, my CPU is in my basement. It works completely fine down here, no d/c problems unless it's provider side. Quite frankly, I'm bored of my basement, and I'm tired of having no window so I moved my PC upstairs to my bedroom. It worked fine for a little bit, but then my net would just crap out on me every half hour or so. And the only way I could get it back up is to keep reinitializing the connection (Unplugging, and plugging my modem power supply back in.)

Is there a reason to why this is happening, and how can i fix it? I don't wanna be stuck in my basement anymore :P.

I am currently with Rogers Cable, no router, just on 1 pc with an external modem.

My default gateway/ip stuff is...

IP Adress. . . 24.42.220.xx
Default Gateway. . . 24.42.220.xxx

Can I ping my gateway?. . . Yes
Said I was average of 6 ms, and no packets were lost.

Thanks in advance.

PS: I Think it may have something to do with...frequency of the modem... or something? or maybe the wires suck?

maybe replace the cable wiring - did you have another cable port upstairs or are you using longer cable wire?

Ya dude well...

My upstairs consists of 2 rooms on 1 side, 1 master bedroom on the other. and theres a small middle area. The cable plug is in the master bedroom, and the cord is underneath the carpet leading into my room which is across the hall. Pretty old cord too.

try replacing the cable wire first and see if it helps.

The entire one, like from the master bedroom and on? Should it all be 1 wire, or 2, 3? Any specific one kind? Does it also have anything to do with all the plugs down in the basement.. the.. switch board or what ever.

theres really no way to know, if its the switchboard or whatever. Just gotta go one step at a time until the problem is solved. It could be something all together different. Personally I would replace from the wall outlet to the computer. If you still have a problem, maybe have the outlets/switchboxed checked out. Unless you dropped the modem or damaged the modem during the move, I doubt that its the problem.

What ver of Windows does the computer use? If its XP next time the computers internet stops working go to Start/Run in the run box type cmd hit enter. Now in the black box at the flashing promt type ipconfig /all and post what it says in here. While it could be a cable problem like renegade suggested it could also be a dns issue. The reason I think that is because you seem to have a good ip address and you can ping the gateway, but if you can't reach a web page or ping a FQDN then it seems like dns might be the problem.

Hmm... i just realised it may also be this. The cable from the master bedroom splits in two and goes into both rooms, kind of our way of getting tv in both rooms without paying :P Could splitting it be screwing it up?

ill try buying a new cable anywho and testing it out.

Yes, I'm on xp.

I don't trust wireless anything. Signals get interupted by things... if someone can prove otherwise to me i'll think about it.

Yep .... I was thinking ... why not go wireless.
A lot will depend on what's between the Wireless Router and the PC ... i.e. if you have concrete/metal reinforced floors, solid granite walls or something like that, you may hit probs, otherwise ordinary buildings pose little/few probs.

Digital Cordless phones, microwaves, cell phones and all normal domestic stuff constantly in use here too and so far my system has worked perfectly.

Not too familiar with ISPs on your side of the pond, but if like the UK, it will probably be cheaper to buy your own on-line.

Maybe someone US based can advise you as to where to buy, best deals etc.

I'm told that newegg is good, but wait until a US member posts, as there may be better deals to be had.

You will need a Wireless Router by the modem and a PCI Wireless Card in the PC.

FWIW ..... I have always found Linksys units to be reliable and fairly easy to set up.
